Sureways Removals Weymouth

Hi
Does anyone know if their is a connection between Sureways of Weymouth and Chalkers?

There was a program on BBC2 last night called ‘Permission Impossible’ where they followed town planners round and discussed the reason why planning permission was granted and refused. In one case after they refused planning, the owners of the property decided to move and there were some excellent shots of two of Advanced vans, one small and one large doing the removal. So one removal contractor was very lucky in getting excellent free publicity on BBC2 prime time viewing

Hey Carl

Just curious whether integrals (like GB Liners’ wagons in your photo) used on work over the ditch were uprated compared with UK-only wagons.

I would imagine they would use standard specified Bedfords as really there was no alternative engines available.

In our case our first TIR we had was EUP488G a Bedford 11.35 ron GVW with 330 cu ft engine. As time went on we used 466 and 500 engines as they were introduced. The 380 cu in engine was a failure and we only had two having fortunatly continued to specify the 330 cu in, and neither of these were ever sent as they certainly would have broken down.

Below is a photo of a 12.5 ton gvw with 500 cu in collecting a removal from Bordeaux. We usually sent a driver with a porter, but in this instance we had sent a two drivers, presumably to speed up the journey. This van had been sent down to our London depot with a load of beds and then travelled over to France empty to collect a removal for Stockton On Tees.

In reality our Bedfords with 330 cu in engine were very fast once wound up, and certainly if in the sixties and seventies travelling down the A1 they passed most other commercial, and with removals as we did overseas, you never had a heavy load, Very few removals exceeded 4 ton and so we were running well below maximum weight, We did however specify 5 speed single speed boxes with high ratio rear axles on all Bedfords.

We also used Seddon Pennines with Perkins engines and in one case in particular I met, at a function, the brother of a customer who had moved to Switzeland in one of our Seddons and he explained that his brother had lived high in the Alps and when our driver found he couldn’t get near the new home for heavy snow, he had casually gone away and hired snow chains and reversed up to the door. We had many very good experienced drivers.

One thing I would not reccomend would be to do what I did, and that was to travel to Naples with a Leyland 350FG, which although fitted with the larger engine option (3.5 litre 4 cylinder) was an experience as it overheated on the way over empty. When we got to Naples with skilled packing by our porter Phil Reilly who accompanied me we got the load on the 750 cu ft body, but we never expected the weight of the load. The removal was undertaken for NATO and their employee was a Geologist who collected stones. Travelling up to the top of the Alps in second gear with the drum, drum of the engine was deafening and maddening, but the thought that we had no brakes because of overloading made a memorial journey down the other side. Here is a photo from the top of the Alps
