Pickfords porters sleep in the back of the van on furniture blankets. What a load of old cods wallop

Although in our day Pickfords were badly run, with the word pathetic coming to mind but in these days o technology and statistics, I find it hard to believe this chap , who by his own account has no qualifications runs Pickfords
Perhaps he has hidden talent, but he certainly seems to keep it well hidden. I heard they were run by accountants & perhaps they are pulling the strings, but the week before it was Robert Forrester from Virtue PLC owners of Bristol Street Motors, and I know he regularly visits all the dealerships with eyes that would pick up a pin out of place. They recon he says little until the day afterwards when he sends his report with all he wants correcting.
This poor fellow was unaware they were trading out of a portacabin, In my opinion the shareholders should be having a hidden boss looking at what he does.
What intrigued me about this programme was the lack of reference to the management structure that is/should be in place in a company the size of Pickfords. I don’t necessarily expect the MD to be aware of the minutiae of the day to day operations but surely the local management teams would be aware of the issues that he found disturbing.
When I was with Pickfords (albeit 40 years ago) it was well known that some drivers would sleep in their cabs or the back of the wagon so that they pocketed the overnight allowance. It wasn’t condoned but it was accepted. I can’t remember there being any occasions that would have required the porters to stay overnight. How far away was the job from their base? If there was a requirement to do the job over two days then you have the staff picked up from the premises and returned the next morning.
With regards to the move of the collection of toys and memorabilia I couldn’t believe that they had just turned up to do the job without prior knowledge of what was involved - do they not have anyone who goes out and estimates the job? How can you price a move without visiting the premises and assessing what was needed in terms of vehicle size and staff numbers.
He has apparently been with Pickfords since 1986 and he’s unaware of what it’s like in the real world? It didn’t say how long he has been MD. If he’s so ashamed of how the company is operating out in the field he should take a look in the mirror and he’ll discover the problem. If he didn’t know that this was what it was like he bloody well should have. There is surely a management structure (that he would have come through) that reports to him - they can’t all be failing to point out what it’s like. If they’re not reporting it then they should be fired.
My thoughts on the programme is that it will have done more harm than good to the reputation of Pickfords. His 15 minutes of fame could have cost the company dearly. To me the programme made Pickfords look like a two-bit operation riding on the name of a once great company. The other removals companies out there must have been rubbing their hands with joy watching this.
And what’s with the chauffeur driven car

When my pal used to night out with Matlock Transport in the sixties he said that he always hoped to find a removals van overnighting nearbye as the crew’s sometimes let him kip with them in the back overnight on a sofa, blankets etc rather than sleep in the cab of his LAD Dodge!
Pete.
What i meant to say was that it was rare for Pickfords porters to have a night a night out, as the driver would be assisted by porters from the local branch.

My first thought when I seen that bit was that it was the driver having a laugh at his expense.
At the memorabilia move the driver says “I think I might need to ring for another truck”. If I was the customer I’d be wondering what the hell was going on. The woman insisted that they had to get everything out that day but they’re then talking about having to stop out overnight - something’s not right. I know that a lot of the stuff is edited for dramatic effect but if I was a shareholder in that business I’d be on to my stockbroker screaming sell, sell, sell.
