Could have been worse Steve…it wasn’t raining or snowing in the pictures!!!
Hi Lee and jdc (james) yes I got back to the yard at 730pm did a hour in the office home by 9pm and in bed by 10 pm , the lads were covering me a bit as I had not been out on a big load for a few weeks .
Jeffk would like that walk .
James we are going to have some more pictures on here buddy ,these ex furinture bumpers are trying recall the nightmares and long walks and bloody stupid overhanging branches stopping us from getting close .
I somehow missed this thread until yesterday and I must admit some of the stories gave me a good laugh and I can empathise with a lot of the tales!
I’m still doing removals and have posted a couple of topics on removals to Greece recently.
Removals are generally good fun to be involved in - with varying destinations (both home and abroad) and meeting a wide range of clients who are mainly pleasant and welcoming. I know that there is more to haulage than just backing onto a loading bay and driving but removals is one of the hardest and most rewarding jobs to be involved in. You can have some good laughs with your colleagues and customers and most removers will have tales to tell.
One of my favourite “incidents” was when I was moving a young couple in their twenties and they had an upright piano. The young man had had an accident at some point in his life and had lost most of his fingers. When we had finished unloading everything bar the piano, I had to move the van to another part of the property so that we could unload through the French windows. Whilst tieing up the blankets and securing the piano for it’s short journey round the driveway, my porter (I shan’t name him!!), in all innocence asked the customer (who had come out for a chat) whether it was he or his wife who played the piano!!! I just buried my head in the pile of blankets trying to suppress the laughter and embarrassment!! Eventually the chap said “I hardly think it’s me is it!”
I noticed a couple of posts with photos of a yellow Pegasus lorry. I worked for them for three months with the aforementioned Derek Lapworth, who now works at Hedleys Humpers. I’ll dig some photos out.

A s you old removal men will recall this is a site you dont want on a Friday about 5pm with this being what you have to tip and far the walk is , is was whacked out .
How many cube is the Merc Jakey?
Cannot see the luton yet
You having a laugh? I’m sure I’ve seen photos of this wagon and there weren’t no luton
That’s something I’d forgotten - delays getting into the new place. Fine if you needed a breather but a royal PITA if you were sat around for 3 hours when all you wanted to do was tip and be off home.

No need to “try” Jakey - they’re indelibly stamped on my memory…

Welcome to a corner of TN for those of us with creaky knees and a knack for solving 3-dimensional jigsaw puzzles in our heads.
Seeing as you’ve just joined the crew, it’s your shout on the teas
For those of you in the Removal trade you should read the J. Miles Leeds thread as I think the contents would have been more interesting on this thread.
I have faint recolections of Miles of Leeds from the seventies, from seeing their vans on the road. Three old vans were parked up for about thirty years and have just been taken away and scrapped. Yet they have a website that appears to be still trading, and yet aspects from the site made me feel like in the T series ‘Life on Mars’ I had turned back the clock thirty years.
I have just posted a reply , and would like the opinion of those who know the removal trade.
Hi Parkroyal , the Atego is 2000 cuft and yes my two big wagons have false lutons at the front to get rid of sofas and any chairs early in the loading , I bloody hate having a rougue chair hanging about , you just cannot get rid of them .

Hi Jakey,
Yes we always put two chairs with the Television in between with the settee sitting on top, filled with small boxes and cushions, and depending on the size of the luton maybe a single matress and base in front of the settee and a double matress and base on top. If you could get rid of the three piece suite (provided they only had one) on the luton it always made packing easier.
