Best Job For A New Pass Class 1 Driver?

Goff118:
I’m a new pass class 1 driver and have the possibility of some Wilko work on weekends via an agency. I’m told it’ll be 1-3 store deliveries per shift.

Can anyone offer any advice on how suitable this sort of work is for a new pass? I’m sure they’ll not send me anywhere too tricky if I tell them I’ve only ever reversed in my training…? :grimacing:

I personally don’t think it’s the best idea for a new driver , probably put you off driving for a living for good ( assuming your not coming from a puddle jumper )
If you’re working mon-fri then I’d bide my time until something easy comes along at weekend , your being asked to run before you can walk , you’ve not just got the reversing to get used too , you’ve the lorry too get used to , I’d of thought a few trunk runs would make more sense .
This is where as a new driver your better off going employed , as you’ll get at least a week in my experience with a company driver & he will give you alit of pointers , so when you do go out your not panicking about tacos, paperwork , where’s the diff lock etc , you can just concentrate on your driving / reversing , and if the driver is like me , you’ll have someone to ring for any advice you may need , best way into places etc
Best of luck , I hope it goes well for you , but no I don’t think it’s the most sensible of ideas , but it is agency so it’s just a bum filling exercise

Best advice…

I’ll offer is make sure you have a really sturdy pair of gloves. If Wilko’s is cages, you’re gonna get your fingers trapped between 'em sooner or later.

Good luck.

Ouch, thanks for the heads up! Speaking to them about the job tomorrow to find out more.

If you have good pair of leather gloves it shouldn’t be an issue [emoji16]

Thanks for this, much appreciated. I thought the advertised rate seemed a bit too good to be true for the area (£20-£23/hr). I have looked at a few Wilko stores on Google Maps and some of their delivery areas look particularly nasty. As you say, trunk runs would be a far more gentle way to start, so I think I’ll bide my time…

Is there a definitive definition of general work?

Yes, it’s when Brigadier Work gets promotion.

Hi guys, me again. I have another potential agency opportunity working out of Tesco Magor. Same question, how suitable/unsuitable is this for a new pass class 1 driver?

You won’t know until you try it mate.
I could say ‘‘Don’t do it,.Bordeom city’’,.I’d personally hate it but it ain’t me it’s you :bulb: …give it a go, if you’re a new driver it’s a beggars and chooser’s situation,.and the more stuff you try the more varied experience you will have on your CV to get a job that you want.

As for avoiding jobs because of tight deliveries etc , in the old days we were just chucked in the deep end of the pool, but it was a good way to learn and to build up your confidence if you just face stuff out.

Hi gents,

After driving rigids for a few years I finally plucked up the courage to do my class 1 and just got my pass today

However I wondering what type of work in best suited towards new pass drivers. After doing 3 years on pallet network on class 2, Im pretty put off from the idea of driving general haulage in an artic.

I’m wondering if trying to get on containers or the walking floors would be a better way to go, but I’m not sure how beginner friendly these options are.

Or would I be better off getting a night trunking gig to slowly build up my reversing skills in HGV friendly depots.

Any advice on which direction to take my search would be much appreciated, thanks

I know you have passed a test to get your license, but if you want to actually learn how to ‘‘drive’’ a class 1 in the shortest space of time then general haulage is the best way to go, you will go to all sorts of places and be faced with multiple scenarios and will get to grips with an artic much quicker than say trunking with the odd reverse here and there. That’s my opinion anyway, it worked for me.

Thanks for this. I’m looking for a Sunday shift every couple of weeks to build up some sort of experience whilst still working full-time (non-driving), so this sounds like it could work. Magor is a bit of a trek for me, but as you say, a start is a start. I’ve been offered an assessment drive next week, so think I will go for it and see how it goes!
