That was a Bedford demonstrator that never actually pulled anything in earnest for John Brown, he preferred to keep using his Volvo’s and Mack’s at the time.

Typical Freddy Ray trailers there, the majority never had any headboards fitted. More obvious by the John Darbyshire one parked next to the Marathon with just a short headboard, was common for Rays to have the boxes overhanging the front of the trailer.

Robinson’s of sandy Volvo. Not a brilliant photo unfortunately.

Couple more photos of Thurstons fair lorries from kempston which I found on the web.

Bedford cold stores Atkinson, no longer going.

Are Watsons still going? As well as tippers there was the shop just off Midland Road.

Don’t remember Bedford Cold Stores…where were they located? Looks like an early intermodal reefer with it secured by two straps onto a flatbed and TIR plate.

Watson’s are long gone poikey, it’s now a mixture of housing and commercial premises where their yard was.

Elstow Storage Depot…spent many an hour there. If that site could talk about what went on from WW2 to the present day!!

Think the last time I was there on a job, it involved the local gavvers dog van and the armed response vehicle…I wanted to go lamping with the aforementioned equipment

Anyone know what this is, Stanley Thurstons around 1961.

Was it a Albion ?
My father used to help fix some of those vehicles as he came from Bunyan Road, and spent many hours repairing engines etc there.

Andy

It isn’t, its actually an Armstrong Saurer (never heard of them).

Saurer are/were a Swiss truck and bus manufacturer. Only Armstrong I’m aware of was a motorcycle manufacturer.
