Becoming an owner driver?

kf28:
I know mate but it’s that step into the unknown, I hate the multi drops pushing cages and furniture into shops is hard and in fact I’msuffering from a bad back at the min. Who would you recommend working for?

but sometimes the unknown is better, I was doing Irish work for over a year and was always afraid about going to over England, again it was the unknown, but I finally done 1 trip out and have been doing it ever since! I would hate to go back to Irish work, trust me if your not happy somewhere you will just sicken yourself… and I cant advise you to go anywhere, its up to you, what you work you like etc, but what I can tell you is they are all they same, its just a different name o the front of the lorry!!!

Cheers mate appreciate the advice, will be looking into companies!

There is nothing wrong with Manfreight and its possible to get some real handy trips with them.
You’ll earn at least £150wk more home!!!

Go on you tube search Hitler and the tangs head down to scanias order the big v8 and matching jacket and hit the road.
pair of brown super Hampton crate of red bull and a magnet jobs a good un

Well I’ve subbied for Sawyers and the amount of messing about their drivers get isn’t worth it, don’t know anything about manfreight, Morgans is £200 a trip but because im under 25 I have to pay towards insurance so I wont be coming home with 200 a trip, another thing ive worked for Hannon before and never again will I go bak and work for massive outfit, its hard to beat the small man, and I want to be my own boss and do my own thing, that’s hard to beat

Well I worked for Sawyers PAYE and the work was a GIFT and no bother to earn £600+home for 3trips
(But I never did the 3  )
Morgans is £225trip (you just have to put the pressure on James “Slap” Morgan :exclamation: :exclamation:
£250 if you can run like the wind :exclamation: :exclamation: :open_mouth: )
The subbies get messed about quite simply because the Subbie gets all the DUNG (running “cowboy”) work yet you want to do that   :exclamation: :exclamation:

The “Small man” who is a subbie on NI fridge work will be running BENT and
that’s a FACT :exclamation: :exclamation: :unamused:

BTW,
Hannon are hardly “massive” :exclamation: :exclamation:

Well depends what you call “dung”, I would call multidrops dung, which most subbies don’t do because there is just no money in it for them, they want one hits as far as you can be sent, and if running bent means more money why not?? if someone working in a warehouse wants more money they work overtime, same thing…

and hannon could be touching 150 lorries and over 200 trailers, their big enough and big enough not to care about their drivers

Oh what a fantastic way to prove that you are of good repute and therefore a suitable person to hold an Operator’s Licence.

You seem to be a bit like me Lee, if someone tells me I can’t do something it makes me more determined to do it! You’re gonna wake up at 60 years old one day, too old to set up as an O/D and it’s always better to regret something you have done rather something you haven’t.

Statistically speaking you are doomed to failure, but if everyone paid attention to statistics the world would be a very drab and boring place. Anyway, if it all goes Pete Tong I’m sure the market will sustain yet another overspecced second hand motor going dirt cheap!

Hi Lee

What type of work are you looking at? Do you have a management CPC yet? You’ll need a few quid in the bank for getting off the ground, and still have some for your statutory finance obligations, as well as an operating centre. If you want to do it, you can make a go of it, its just graft though. Im fairly sure the TRU have similar requirements to mainland traffic commissioners.

Well there should be no problem workwise, I was thinking of subbing for the likes of Sawyers/Norfolkline etc, I know its not ideal but it will get anyone off the ground… no haven’t the management CPC yet, I`m planning on doing it in june, that’s the next time the course is on. Yea I understand it takes a lot of money to get started but that’s why I need financial advice aswell, better to rent or buy a unit?? And when you say operating centre I presume you mean yard? can you not just work from the house? or does it have to be a commercial premises?

subbing for nfl,or sawyers■■?..choke,gasp,snotters,hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha…lamb to the slaughter, and bust within 6 months…next victim please…if your asking this, with all respect mate, you havent a clue…cop yourself on…youl make as much working in kfc if your for real with the post…end of.

are you on drugs son■■?
how small do you think dfds, sawyers, montys,mc burnies and the mushroom brigades are…give up now…theres a good boy.

I’ve looked into this and decided not to bother. Far too much out lay and headaches.

What did I do instead? I set up as a freelance driver rather than owner driver. Im getting just under £600 for a 40 hour week, obviously a ■■■■ load of tax/NI etc to be paid out though.

How much was the initial set up costs? around £300. That was business cards, new Hi viz with company name, website hosting, fuel for looking for work. I didnt have any work for the first 4/5 weeks and didnt get paid for another 3/4 weeks after that but the money is coming in fairly regularly now.

Less hassle, same/more money.

I dont think so

If you plan on doing long distance work London - scotland - London then I can give u some work and pay you within 30days,

Stay away from the big companies, you will subcontract for a higher price not working for them than directly working for them.

In terms of fuel cards my advice would be make sure you get fortnightly invoicing otherwise you will be paying 1000.00 every week and not get a penny back for 30 days. And I would say to anyone starting out you need 15-20k readily available.

If you do the miles, that’s where the money is like me. I can point you in the 1000+ per week take home. No problem!

I hire my trailer because it’s straight out of tax bill, and I run a new montracon so no initial outlay. I don’t get great mpg fully loaded tends to be 6.5 loaded 8.7 unloaded, get a higher horsepower circa 500 and go for an XL vehicle. space is key when you practically live in it

Now i may be wrong but if you need to ask the kind of questions your asking i hardly think your ready to make the leap into being an OD the one thing you need to succeed is experience i have often coincided doing it my self but when i do the sums i think its not worth it maybe a few years ago but these days i really think your better off searching for a well paid job its an awful lot of risk and i dont think the returns warrant the expense or grief but thats just my opinion , the big players have lots of trucks on the road they cut rates to get work on the premise that each truck can earn less because they have so many ie the stobarts of the industry make money out of wearhousing not trucks as long as they meet costs with a small profit there happy due to there numbers but good luck with it anyway i think you will need it in bucket loads

what you running, an old ERF :open_mouth: they are pretty poor figures imo

If you are already planning on running bent before you start you have no hope, the days of being able to run from one end of the country to the other are long gone ANPR cameras have seen to that. You will be No 1 target for the authorities if you have a Sawyers or a Monty fridge on although they are all now the same company. The authorities are not stupid as we may like to think, A few years ago when a policeman was letting me out of the police station on the M6 by Preston a Monty subby went past Peeler turned to me and said “after your company they are next on the hit list” wasn’t to long after that that Monty took the work back in house. A park up and a decent fine will put your lights out. If you want to go down the OD route then get a trailer too and approach companies direct know of a few one man bands in the South running direct for people and they seem to be making a good go of it

Volvo globetrotter…

27tons tho. But the money I’m paid is considerably more. That’s why I said I wouldn’t get another wagon under 500bhp

I run full weight to the North of Scotland every week and mine never drops below 8mpg loaded
