Instead of train driving what about signalling, I started 2 years ago best thing I’ve done. Just had this months payslip and just short of £37000 for 11 months with one month left of the tax year, that’s for a 4 day week 3 week roster 28 hours 1st week, 38 2nd and 33 hours 3rd week. Sure beats driving.
as an ex signaller can only agree 28years on the boxes shame they are all closing and its all regional control centers now
where are you based mate and what grade ?
I’m grade 2, based anywhere between York, Leeds and Doncaster area when they started closing boxes they always seemed to be short staffed and I ended up being sent to cover even did 6 weeks in the roster office. Don’t mind though wonderful job.
Where were you based?
all around Manchester mate started as a box lad at stockport (Heaton Norris &edgely no1) did some time on the platform then went to signalschool and on to work in no order greenfield rochdale philipspark no1 crowsnest junction glazebrook newmills south heaton norris and edgeley 2 loved it for most of the time but close to the end got cheesed off with the new style management shame only the last four boxes on the list are still open now .

try the virgin trains web site lots of info on there
For anybody within 40 minutes commuting distance of Old Oak Common, West London, Great Western Railway are currently advertising for the role of Shunter for their HST’s. 35 hour week and pays about 30K I think.
Mate of mine is a Shunter and they work a roster of one week on, one week off. Seven days of 10 hours each, and then the next seven days off.
Normally a good internal route into trainee driver. Closing date 24th February.
Train Driving would be pretty cool imo
Great pay and not mad hours. I would urge anybody thinking about it to go for it. I know a few guys who work for Scotrail and they say the same

Ok so you truck drivers are earning £40k+ a year, how do you give that up a secure well paying gig to go and become station staff or whatever earning a third of what you currently earn in a different location etc?
From reading your posts I get the impression that you’re not a truck driver on £40k+ pa, in fact you’re having problems finding work and you don’t really want to drive trucks anyways, so what’s stopping you applying for any sort of job on the railways and at least you’d be working and maybe in the right place when they want to recruit drivers?

Ive got a job, I’m no longer having problems finding work as a result, I’ve stopped looking for Hgv driving jobs.
The thing stopping me from applying for jobs on the railways or in any other industry is the lack of opportunities advertised or otherwise, if there was a suitable vacancy advertised or if it was whispered into my ear id apply, simples.

In almost every industry the best jobs are seldom advertised, they don’t need to advertise them because they get the person through the industry grapevine, you need to be in the know and that means taking the crap jobs to get your foot in the door.
I’ve got many jobs the same way, I’ve not even known some of the companies were looking for people, just get a random phone call asking me if I want to work for them.
AND FROM THE BACK! he must have been going at some lick to get so far up, it was a east euro driver ,he couldn’t get under the low bridge to where he was going (he could see the delivery point) so just went for it.
