They should get all those who say Jap crap was built better to enter a Datsun Bleubird against them and see what happens when some of those old BMC beasts hits it a few times.

Ainât been for years whatâs the tool of choice now Volvo 740?
you"d do well to beat a volvo 240 estate. take alot of stick and easy enough to pull back out with some hiab work. in the unders(up to 2 litres) its the mondeos ruling the roost, destroying everything
Will probably take the kids to Wimbledon this Winter if Spedeworth still have racing on, I started racing at Crayford Stadium as a teenager and itâs totally different in a stadium atmosphere under lights. That was over 30 years ago now and I can still remember the smell of Castrol R as if it was yesterdayâŚ
A little bit of trivia, âMouldy Old Doughâ is still the only Number One single ever to have been performed by a band containing a mother and her son. It was recorded in the front room of a semi-detached house in Coventry.

How much does it cost these days to run a banger?
You need a trailer and a tow car of course. Itâs a while since Iâve done it but I would say ÂŁ500-ÂŁ1000 for kit- helmet, overalls, roll cage (mine was made from scaffold), a water tank to replace the radiator, fuel tank, harness, fire extinguisher etc.
Then however much the car costs. Back in the day you could pick up a scrap car for a tenner but This is being advertised on ebay at £850 as a potential banger. ebay.co.uk/itm/ROVER-P5-V8-A ⌠500wt_1361
its certainly not cheap anymore. rollcage around ÂŁ250,water tank aroundÂŁ150/200,floorplate ÂŁ80. thats before the drivers door plate and plates and nut and bolts for the other doors, then theres fuel tank etc. oh and a decent race harness is ÂŁ100 plus. alot of people have ârace enginesâ now too that they transfer from car to car and sticky tyres. how times change. plus ideally you need a lorry and hiab,to transport them and stretch them back out.
We used to do Grass Track Racing, which was basically remove the windows and lights, put some scaffold tubes inside and remove the interior and spare seats, then people came with Safety Devices roll cages, dry sump pumps, Recaro seats, limited slip diffs, quick cams and blueprinted engines. You normally tell who they were they were the ones in racing overalls and driving round about half way down the field
It eventually became too expensive when the rules were tightened up and the posh people got involved!
Theres a Rover meeting coming up in July at Foxhall in July, and a Cortina meeting at Swafham in July as well. Never had a go at bangers, wouldnât mind but the cost now is a bit off putting, been to watch plenty of times at Mildenhall, despite living within a stones throw of Foxhall for the past 4yrs, havent been to watch there yet. There used to be a few blokes I knew that raced at Mildenhall.
When I did it, it was quite cheap, cars cost nothing, my first water tank was made out of a Jerry can, my roll cage was four pieces of scaffold tube and some clamps, my petrol tank was a motorbike petrol tank and I got the harness made up by a local seamstress out of old seat belts for a few pounds.
Iâm sure the rules have tightened up a lot, especially at the premium tracks, but the biggest problem for me was just the enormous amount of time it took up. You do need a few willing helpers, especially one who can weld.
I did love it though, being on the rolling start is the most fantastic adrenaline buzz.

the speeds of the cars now is the reason for the tightening of the rules harry, these days theyre flying. at the world final meeting at foxhall the bangers are going round like national hotrods!!!
agree with the buzz when the gate closes and the rolling lap starts, its unreal

Been there, done that. In fact I was Class 4 champion for 2 years at Blyton near Gainsborough, until I sold up in 07, but I am now asst safety officer at the same venue. We had a 2 day meeting at the weekend, and have another starting on Saturday July 14th if anyone is interested.
Then thereâs the Mens Nationals on the weekend of 4/5th August at Thornborough, which is about 3 miles to the west of the Quernhow on the A1. For those that like piston engined aircraft, a BBMF Spitfire is booked for both meetings.
Nothing beats a twin bike engined Cinquecento for speed.

Ken.
My friends owned Rallydrive at Blyton, but you sound like poacher come gamekeeper now. I am in a similar position with the 2 wheel sport having swapped a crash helmet for a rule book and a radio.
