Another good photo Dean, yes it is in Chard I forgot about the Merc, just see a red one on the left can’t remember if that was colas colours or someone else.
yes the old Mercedes never drove it but remember a guy called George had her reckon it was a gutless motor . iirc George used to like the old sherbert a little bit too much and went missing for a day every so often not saying the two were linked if you know what I mean . Another useless bit of info cheers dennis
Remember delivering to GIB with frozen goods, the thing that always sticks in my mind for those who have not done that job is the fact you have to go over the main airport runway in between the plane traffic think it was on traffic lights, this was not the route taken by cars and pedestrians which was different. On another note when I went remember three things, first a policeman in English regalia and you had to pinch yourself to remember where you where, filling to the gunnels with super cheap fuel at the Shell station and having a shower in an old tin porta cabin think in the docks, only I was third in and it went from warm to freezing water in a flash but then it was very hot outside. Continued my journey to load Tomatoes for which I waited three days for, not uncommon back in the day, cheers Buzzer.

I quite often did Gibraltar on my way to Morocco. I’d pick up non-frigo groceries from Marks & Sparks/Gist at Hemel Hempstead and run it down there in a garment trailer, tip in Gib and then go empty to the ferry at Algeciras for Tangiers. I did one of these during that awful foot-and-mouth epidemic in the early 2000s and I cleared the Spanish side but the Gib side wouldn’t let me in because they wanted verification that the Easter eggs contained milk that had been foot-and-mouth tested! I ask you. That put me in a difficult position because lorries aren’t allowed to ‘over-night’ in Gib. In the end, I was allowed to park in the main bus station with all the comings and goings. Near the bus station was a good Indian eating hole and plenty of the good stuff to wash it down with! I was cleared next morning. Who ever heard (herd!) of an Easter egg with foot-'n-mouth? Robert
Robert I came across a similar incident when going through the Blanc one day, the chap in front of me had a pallet of Duraglit wire wool cleaner stuff on board and they had him for there for ages with him proclaiming that they could not set light to it but in the end they won and he got a wopping fine for not declaring and of course not having any hazchem kit etc typical happening back then, Buzzer.
Thanks to Dean, Dennis, Buzzer, and Robert,as I remember we went there for Sunday lunch once with our good friend Jed didn’t we Robert. As for driving across the runway John all the traffic used the same road it was just coming through the border bit the trucks used a different entrance,if you went out late in the evening you went out the same way as the cars.

I’d forgotten about that, Cliff! Jedd was on some mission so I swapped trailers with him at La Linea before going back to Morocco and the three of us strolled into Gib for Sunday lunch in that big pub on the right going up the main street. Beautiful weather and a cracking day out, from what I remember! Cheers, Robert.
Oh, and I’ve even found a picture of La Linea! I think we did the trailer swap at Tamoil and used Jedd’s unit to go to the crossing. Robert
I didn’t actually deliver to Gib for D.T.S. although I went there quite a few times socially whilst waiting in Algeceras, but this was my last time delivering there for Axminster Transport 1985 or 1986.
Another great photo Dean I don’t know where you keep finding them it was Edgar lorry looking like it was brand new.
We were so lucky doing the job when we did we would ship from Calais into Dover quite often to spend the weekend in Dover, with other drivers on fridge work.Cadwalader, Christian Salvesen, Fransen, Sparks,Permatrans, Central Road, Forsey ,Kelly Freight, Leggitts, Frigoscandia, Alderson, just to mention a few. No charge for parking for the weekend and good company to go to the pub with. Then you hear what is happening in Calais today I for one am pleased I’m not there, but I feel for the guy’s that have to put up with the idiots that are putting the drivers in great danger. It is long overdue that our government did something to help drivers and hauliers.
As we all get older this is all we seem to hear. Another of our great friends has gone and left us here, Bernie Fiddy a driver from Framptons of Shepton Mallet, one of life’s great characters and one of the biggest wind up merchant’s you would ever come across. R.I.P.Bernie.
That name rings a bell Cliff but cant place his face ? I definately recognise the name and am pretty sure
he would of been running around the same time as Micky and big Paul ?
RIP Bernie.
You would have known him Mickey and Bernie were the 2 original drivers for Framptons.
Dean
Apparently Paul Rooney still works for Framptons, UK only.
