Having had to stop on the hard shoulder to reaffix a strap, it is an unpleasant and scary place to be.
It makes you appreciate the 40mph limit when you are stood on the coned off roadworks section unloading / loading.

just wondering, have you ever done a driving job?
The limit through the roadworks on the M1 at Luton has just been raised from 40 to 50. Loads of shiny new signs every few hundred metres showing the limit to be 50, so why are so many drivers still going through them at 40?
Seems they have been up and down there for months now with the limit at 40 and aren’t even noticing the signs to show the limit has been raised.
With regards to it having to be a pair of linked cameras to enable a prosecution what’s to say they have to link the camera at the start of lane 1 with the one at the end? They could link it with the one at the end of lane 2 and catch those who change lanes to avoid being caught.

I can’t really understand anyone liking cruise.
Me, the less I actually have to do the better. Always used it as much as possible on any vehicle I’ve owned or driven.
Lucy:
Let’s face it, we all go around whining about speed limiters and how boring they make a drive and how that adds to driver fatigue
Not me. Again, less is more.
You don’t count Neil…You may be many things, but typical is not one of them.

YEP longest one was for 16 years delivering sheet steel (mostly 8’ x 4’ razor blades) for the same company as an in-house LGV driver.

Last week we had a 40 limit, now 50. But the contraflow is the same - 2 reasonable width lanes with lane 3 on the opposite side of the central reservation seperated from oncomming traffic by another barrier. The works at the side of the road also appear to be the same.
So has someone shown some common sense and realised the previous limit was too low or are they just trying to ease congestion back at junction 6.
What I thought was crazy was when they were using the hard shoulder as running lane 1 northbound and at every overbridge or bridge support the width reduced so much that they just bent the lane markers to steal the space off lane 2 which was also open to HGV’s.
They could have changed the limit from 40 to 50 when they changed the layout or have I missed something?
No idea why the change, as you say not much else has changed. I just wish a few more would actually notice the change and speed up a bit.
I agree about cruise control - on long boring stretches of motorway, it definitely saves the leg. Combined with the adjustable engine brake, you can pretty much drive the whole length of the M4 without touching the pedals. Need to slow down ? flick the engine brake on for a second (which cancels the cruise) then at the required speed turn cruise on again.
Of course you have to keep an eye on the traffic a long way in front to judge it right, but I thought that was the idea anyway.
I got enough “driving” practice taking 26 ton loads of stone up to Bourton on the Water from Somerset via Cirencester. Crawler up some hills and up and down the box all the time.
I drove across the US in a car (East to West and back) and pretty much all the freeway work was done with cruise control, had a plus and minus on the steering wheel, and worked a treat. Especially in an automatic, there wasn’t much “driving” to be done anyway.
That’s the trouble with these idiots in average speed checks. You knock it back to 49mph on the cruise and end up having to hit the brakes because of idiots in cars braking for the cameras. The M3 has lane 2 and 3 restricted to 6’ 6’’ so when you get a car doing 40 in lane 1 it really ■■■■■ you up.
And then of course, they pass the last set of cameras and cones, but won’t speed up until they pass that all important national speed limit sign !
A quick edit after reading the following post - I drive at night, and pretty much all the roadworks I go through are deserted. In the daytime, or when there are workers about I always move out a lane as well.

Mind you though my own opinion of speeding through roadworks is that it is about the most selfish and dangerous thing a driver can do. The guy’s working just a few feet away are just doing a job and have families too so the speed limits are there for their protection not just an inconvenience.■■■■ right mate!!
My brother worked as barrier erector a few years back and one of his workmates told me about a time when he was working down London on some barriers. A transit van came straight threw the cones and killed a two workmen instantly, He said 6 people resigned that day.
