Australia Trip

There’ll be a vacancy coming up today.

Good points SDU, unless @franglais intends to go outback outback (e.g. Googs track, Cape York) any SUV will get you most places, even a Subie Forester will do tricky stuff.

Forums are another option for buying, not just LR, there are lots of Oz-based forums for Toyota, Nissan &c, most will have a “for sale” section.

This being a public forum, I really couldn’t say…

Also, as a foreigner, you are at risk of a swift ejection, something I am always aware of here. I passed the langage test here immediately after the Brexit Ref but didn’t take nationality further as they were demanding 100 year old documents for goodness’ sake. Wish I had now, always have to be squeaky clean.

I was being curious about, rather than looking for work!
I like the idea of wheeling around a road train for a trip or two …but realistically, that ain’t about to happen. I’m hopefully up for learning new stuff, but I can’t see me as a good prospect for training up as a drover or whatever.

On the visa front it seems UK passport holders can get a 3month free e-visa, (online in 24hrs?) or just under 200$Aus for a full year visa unlimited entry/exit in that time… Gotta look closer but there are also reciprocal health care agreements, but I will definitely double check that too.

The idea of direct flights isn’t very appealing to me. I am not a nervous flyer particularly, but don’t like being stuck in a tube for 24hrs, so I’m looking at breaking flights up. On the other hand, could be asleep for half of that and only one check in and debarque.
Because of no time restraints, (retired) I could take a quick or longer stopover en rte.

I am looking at round the world tickets that allow for variable length stopovers en rte. The prices are less than buying separate flights and seem in line with getting last minute deals, but are bookable with ABTA protections. More research needed.

Re buying a 4x4 camper.
Good advice from @star_down_under to get the rego in QLD I think.
Once on the ground, or a month away, I’ll be looking closer but am trying to get a feel of asking prices earlier.
HiLux are probably cheaper on running costs than a bigger LandCruiser, That will be for fuel tyres as well as any breakdowns. Not as “hairy-chested” but good enough for some gente off roading.
One dealer has what seems to be ex rental HiLux with Tavlor bodies. Advertised at 47k driveaway price with 3yr warranty. Daresay cheaper if I rattle my piggy bank under his nose.

Budget hotel and small hire car to go look see once there.

Victoria does the same as Queensland, rego wise.
I might be able to get you a multi trailer experience.

Oh my ! That sounds like fun,
All chrome stacks and lights and a proper gearbox?

That’ll be another coffee (or more!) i will have to buy you! :grinning:

Surely to get to Oz cheaply you just need to be a naughty boy or pay the £5 Pom ticket (or are these options not available now?)

A fiver?
I seem to remember the “Ten Pound Poms”?

Bit more than that now.

Some good information on this website especially about resale of vehicle and especially if your going to spend that much.

Cheers. I’ll have a read of that.

If you have unlimited time you could take shortish 4 or 5 hour flights on budget airlines the whole way

London - Istanbul - Abu Dhabi - Sri Lanka - Kuala Lumpur - Bali - Australia is a route that works

Yep. I am thinking along those lines. But maybe more than 5hrs-ish.
Qantas do some tickets with free stopovers, so that is easier than mix’n’match different airlines.

Other travel companies offer round the world tickets, with customisable stopovers.
Trailfinders is one for sure. They will also tie in hotels en-rte etc. Also ABTA protected and rated highly by “Which”, Trust Pilot Trip Advisor.
Yes, more expensive than looking out for the cheapest deals but then again, seems safer, easier, and just one point of contact rather than many.

Toying with UK>Vancouver>Hawaii>Aus loooong stop over>Thailand>India?

Maybe a short week in a motorhome Canada and few days on beach in Hawaii? City hotel and buy car in Aus, then off on a jaunt coast and red center and…and…and. Maybe a couple of short city breaks on the way back?

Although I do have free time, I am not too keen on being absent for many continuous months. Might do a slow trip out. Quick return to UK for a month, Quick return to Aus and slow meander around before stopovers on the return home.

Because I have few commitments I do have many options. I need to tie down a frame work or nowt will happen.

Way back in the '60s I came to the wrong end of my funds in Delhi, was living in the YM and eating very cheaply on the pavement with a chapati walla who served very nourishing soup as well.

So I emptied my bank account in England and bought a Quantas ticket to Darwin. This included a stopover in a very posh hotel in Hong Kong. Fortunately I had a very good view of the colony because I had no money to spare to go out and about and even shrugged my shoulders at the door when my porter delivered me to my room. I probably looked the part because he made no fuss and shrugged back.

I arrived in Darwin with a 5 pound note in my pocket and from then on every way was up. :joy:

Even if it meant reducing myself to a fiver again, I would go back and do it all over again. Whatever you choose,@Franglais, I will be with you in spirit. :grinning:

I promise to bring back a stick of rock for you! :grinning:

Although I think that quarantine rules might be against that now?

Have you considered UK - Los Angles - Hawaii - Aus ?

A few years ago Air New Zealand used to do Auckland - San Francisco direct.

We have done Aus & NZ at different times on Emirates via Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Singapore. Also on Air New Zealand via Hong Kong.
Out of all the above stopovers Singapore is our favourite.

We have just returned from a three week trip to Vancouver Island, the place to go if you want to go Bear watching.

Not sure how much long haul you have done in the past but be mindful of the effect all the flying has on your body clock and general well being.

Cheers.

Nope, no long haul flying experience at all which is why I am a bit wary.
I have done enough half shifts on Sunday nights and full late days to know that I am not as as young, nor as resilient as I once was. I don’t expect luxury, but do not want a trip that is an endurance challenge.

Did think of looking at a one way hire motorhome in the US on the way over, and as you say, LA to Hawaii.

Singapore sounds interesting for a visit, so many choices out there.

The trip keeps on getting bigger and bigger. maybe its a world cruise that’s required.
It’s a great position to be in to be able to do it, but sometimes it turns out like a kid in a sweet shop, the more you look the more you want

Needs to have a chat with Robroy, he’s sure to want some input!

A cruise? Not for me.

I know many love them, but I am not keen on the idea.
Yes same hotel every night, and a different city every day, but…not knocking those who want that, but not me.
