Thanks for those pictures, Buzzer.
Wallaroo is in southern South Australia, a little north of Adelaide. South Australia has always been a big producer of grain, Wallaroo is where it was loaded onto ships.
Fine SDU if you are wondering how they got those sacks up to the top to the ālumpersā as they were called to stack it was by the pully system that can be seen in the picture pulled by a horse, Buzzer
These were test vehicles for the ill fated V8 AEC. Theyāve come from an old AEC Gazette and the person who posted them was a test driver. He said the cab was designed for Australia with flat panels to make it easier to repair in isolated areas. They were fitted with air con. One of the vehicles had a twin turbo V8 but when they scrapped the V8 programme they cut them down to 4x2 units and fitted TL12 (AV770s) in them .They were run night and day from Southall to the Severn Bridge then turned around up the M5 to junction 3 then back to Southall. He states the engines were taken out after 50000 miles stripped down checked put back together and off again. They were running at 44 tons back in the very early 70s
From Steveās Place Down Under:
Loading up for the show
And at the show (didnāt this used to be the Penrith Truck Show?):
I know jack about truck shows down south. I used to do all the SEQ historic shows, but havenāt got to any this year. It makes me feel old when Iāve driven half of the types on display and would happily jump in twenty-five percent and load for anywhere.
Iām not as long in the tooth as you, but I look at that Mitsi āeff-kā in the line-up and remember the days long ago when I used to drive them (weird windows and mirrors, 3000prm red band) around S*itney.
Long story short, once with much reluctance took a brand new Mitsi, pm to Sydney from Brisvegas. I screwed the boss down to pay me a decent trip rate on top of my hourly rate and motel bill. I refused to find a load back home, that was his job. I had the last laugh, he never got paid for the Sydney load and I could have found a better paying load home.
Something for SDU & spardo: Haulinā the Hume
I was there for this one, not far from where it was filmed.
(For the uninitiated, itās an annual event where all sorts of old dungers classic trucks drive as much of the old Hume Hwy (basically the old goat track from Sydney to Melbourne) as they can/ want to, there are several stages involved so people can opt in/ out. Itās a good thing, you see and hear lots stuff from Morris vans upward.)
Lots of memories there, some good, some not so good. Quite a few of the actual trucks I recognised.
Thanks for the video.
Some great old motors there parkroyal. It makes you stop and think what hardship some of those drivers went through driving the likes of Mickey Mouse Fodens Atkinsons and Commers even TK Bedfords but i take my hat off to the poor soul in the Woolworths CF DAF .At least they would have had chance to take a break at McDonalds before negotiating that hill.McDonald, a man who i greatly admire, who started with a small farm in Scotland and now look at him a worldwide brandš
I was thinking the very same thing: in the midst of all this historic what-have-you, some poor sodās got work to do and heās probably at least 15mins late because of all the aforementioned historic palaver.
Iām way out of my league with much of the Australian-built US stuff myself, but F86, ACCO, the Foden (ex-Aboods?), Denning coach, TKs, that sort of thing helps.
A lot of those Yank based trucks were struggling with 6-53s or the ducks nuts 6-71s, they thought they were king of the road then.
Me too the Europeans stick out a bit whereas the Yanks to my untrained eye all look the same.Mind you the Australian Atki is a much improved version of its English brother.I couldnāt tell whether the F10/F12/F16 was workinh or part of it.Probably a 12 or 16 the way it went up that hill.
CF wouldnāt be impressed with that comment
If you live somewhere else, you have to either ignore it or listen and learn: I prefer the latter. I didnāt just visit Indonesia, I drove a minivan there and that gave me a proper edumacation. I am not for an instant comparing myself with all the old soaks on here who did UK ā Iran or Africa or beyond, Iām just saying you canāt learn it from books.
Another statement to not impress Carryfast.
