Good argument for a bank holiday to be introduced to commemorate the sacrifices that many have made on our behalf so at least everyone can have some time to reflect.
… not much chance of reflection unless you shut the pubs and shops

Obviously you have a right to an opinion, and I don’t wish to derail the thread, but I think this is a subject beyond politics and arguments about right and wrong.I have a great deal of respect for our armed forces. They do their duty without question, and always have done. Their feats have been incredible, these are the real heroes in my eyes (not that they would agree), not “celebrity” types like we see on TV etc.
When I wear my Popeye it also reminds me of my now passed grandad who had lots of stories to tell of his time in the desert and Italy. I only wish I was old enough at the time to appreciate what he was saying.
Popeye?

This Saturday we will be at Leicestershire’s RBL Branch concert. Next Saturday we will be in London as my Girlfriend is carrying the Leicestershire Royal British legion Branch standard at the Royal albert hall for the Big festival of rememberance she has to be there at 7am for rehersals and will not finish in London until 10pm but she is adamant she will be home and on parade on the Sunday morning, She will then be on parade again on the 11th. She is only 25 but puts her heart and soul into her RBL work.

There are a group of local ladies go every year to the Albert Hall and place a wooden cross for our fallen friend(s) I have just paid my 2014 subs to the RBL and bought a rubber wristband instead of a poppy for everyday use. I will have a proper popeye for my civic duties,
National holiday here , we(family) and most of our small town will be paying our respects with a service in the hall followed by wreath laying at the memorial garden .
Considering the amount of time and effort which quite rightly goes into this occasion, I too think that it ought to be considered for a national holiday on the day in which it lies.

I have a metal poppy badge for work I had a nasty experience with a H4H wristband while exiting a tractor so I don’t wear em for work.
No one has ever noticed that at the 11th hour every year this forum gets locked down for two minutes, no one can read or post - and that shows in itself that the impact of shutting down for two minutes is a minor thing, but the act as a mark of rememberance it is a powerful message, we can all stop and remember without the world coming to an end, which it did for so many people.
As long as I have control of this website it will mark the act of rememberance as will I and my family in our own way. We never forget
Did anyone else hear that knob from some university student union on R2 today? Made me vomit!

Me too. (RAF child from an RAF family - which, incidentally, is why I have no real accent.)
I’m off duty, on the Sunday, I’ll attend the service at my local memorial garden and I’ll observe the 2 minutes silence on Monday to remember the fallen and old comrades no longer with us.

If I wrote what I actually thought, i’d be permantley banned from this forum.
Everyones entitled to an opinion, but to go on national radio and claim that Rememberance Day is run by the government, shows how ignorant the bloke is. He fights for peace everyday, not just one day. Well mate, some of us remember everyday, not just one day. Now kindly ■■■■ off you ignorant ■■■■

This.
Last week I heard from my uncle how my maternal grandfather was in the royal artillery. Was evacuated at Dunkirk, went back just after D Day and was crewing an anti aircraft gun that brought down a V1 in Belgium. His unit were meant to’ve been moved to Holland but didn’t go in the end as Market Garden went ■■■■ up.
I’ve heard other great stories concerning other relatives, but why do so many only surface years after the veteran’s passed away?

Yes i’ll be grinding to a halt somewhere just before 11.00. We went to Northern France last year and done a lot of touring around all the war graves and museums etc and it really brings it home and should be a must see place for any British person.
I went to Salerno in Italy last year as my uncle bill died two days before the end of the war. I was at his graveside with tears in my eyes.
I always wear my poppy with extra pride, not just for uncle bill but my best mate Tom who was shot dead besides me in Belfast 1974.

well full up.so yes always respect the fallen… well any one who served.
John
I went there in August. We drive Calais an stayed there the night just to watch the service at 8pm. It was superb to see what they do every single night for the fallen was a real eye opener. I learnt all about the war and sacrifices made but until I witnessed that in August I don’t think I really appreciated what people done for us. The ammount off names on the wall was hard to take in.
I will try and stop If I can as I always do but if I can’t the radio will certainly be off along with the two way and ill spend 2 minutes being thankful for what I have instead off complaining about it.

Don’t always have the opportunity to do that, but I will be on parade playing with my brass band through our town centre on Rememberance Day Sunday 10th, as we do every year - here’s hoping for a dry day!!

I’m not really sure tbh but one thing I have started to do is do my family tree using one of those websites you see on the TV. What’s striking is that an awful lot of records from WW1 have been scanned in to these websites; I was able to find a scanned in form from my great grandfather to his regiment showing who should be contacted if anything happened to him.
This form had the fathers name and address on so I was able trace my family back into the 1870’s.
A lot of records from WW2 are still under lock and key, I’d love to be able to have a look through some of these.
