I’m following this post as just completed all 4 modules last week. All jobs I’ve seen are asking for minimum 6 months. The agency ones (which is my only option) don’t usually require any but not guaranteed work all the time. But it’s a start in the right direction.

What firms would LIKE, and what they will actually GET, can often be 2 different things mate!
i.e. Apply and see what happens…

I suppose so… I didn’t want to seen cocky and waste anyone’s time. But yes it’s worth a try.

I started my first driving job last Tuesday, class 1 too. Its general haulage and average 60 hours a week. The money isn’t great but the work seems easy! Save for the odd store delivery if necessary. Shifting mainly light loads from paper mills to supermarket distribution centres I see it as a good place to start. However, I’ve gotten myself into a few ■■■■ ups with a whole host of people watching! I always seems to balls my reverse up in the RDC’s. It takes me a good few attempts almost every time. But hey, I’ll get there in the end!

Crewe
Another +1 for E8B.
I did my C+E test one Wednesday and had a start on a night-trunk by the following Friday. Not all company hoist their skirts up and run away from new passes like girls…
Go looking, but there’s nothing wrong with limping round for a while - there are advantages to being able to say “I’m unavailable next Thursday”.
Well I turned down an interview for a fuel job this week!
It was class VAN
So there you go, you don’t need 2 years experience for doors to start opening!

No mate, I believe they are only over Hamble/Netley way anyway, so not for me…
I’m happy where I am for the moment anyway, not the same money as I’d get doing fuel deliveries, but my job is easier and probably not that much different on the money that I’d want to change. Plus I want to stick with what i’m doing as I’d not good for the CV to switch around too much, as it looks like you can’t stick a job after a while.

I wouldn’t worry about your reversing mate. Took me at least 6 months to perfect mine and I still can occasionally balls it up. I’ve been driving HGV’s for 5 years now.
There are guys who have been driving them over 10 years who openly admit they still can’t reverse very well. And these (usually the older generation) veteran truckies who tell you if you can’t reverse you’re not a proper lorry driver, are usually the ones to sit back and watch you ■■■■ up without so much as helping.
Keep doing what you’re doing!
I’ve finally found a job I love doing - liquid tankers (non adr). Might do my adr soon.
I’ve done a lot of crap jobs and worked for some very dodgy cowboy outfits but I’m now with a company that does everything by the book, knows each drivers’ name, looks after their kit, give you the flexibility of nights out if you want them, reasonable pay and plenty of training.
Turns out there are some good jobs out there but in my experience they are hard to come by these days.
It did worry me when I was leaving the army about the 2 years experience would be a problem. I walked into a crap job the day I left collecting confidential waste in class 2 and vans and kept that up until I was offered a class 1 job with a fairly well known biscuit company. So to say I’ve landed on my feet in the 6 months I’ve been a civi is the understatement of my life.
Couldn’t put it better than E8B’s opening post.
We have taken on a couple of lads straight out of the Army, both under 25 and neither with any real experience of driving and it’s worked out fine ( though I made sure they went out a lot with older guys before they were let loose on their own!).
A lot of it is down to attitude - go somewhere looking like you threw yourself together from a charity bag and the ‘Big I Am’ aura and you’ll get nowhere. Smaller companies tend to be more flexible on the insurance thing, though I think that is changing, if only because the big corps like to pretend that they are doing something to help people up the ladder and it looks good on their website.
I only really wanted to drive a tipper. I endured 18 months on 7.5 ton (parcels) weekends and school hols to fit around my school office job - hated it, so heavy and physically draining - there was many a time I sat in my cab on break at the end of my deliveries and cried out of exhaustion and hurting from lugging huge parcels and car tyres in and out the back (no tail lift) and thinking I can’t do this anymore but I always enjoyed the long drive back to the depot and carried on. Also, some of the couriers I was delivering to were rude (they all wanted their parcels at 7!) but I stuck it out for the experience and extra income to help fund my licence.
I was very lucky, (which makes a change for me lol) I passed C in January, did one class 2 shift for Hermes (that was enough!) then an agency offered me 2 weeks tipper work in July (that was nerve-wracking, I only had 4 days tipper experience with someone in the cab). I turned up at the assignment early and nearly bottled it and went home but I said to myself come on girl you can do this, took a deep breath, found the boss and it was a case of “there’s the truck, hope you’re ok with a manual, keys in washer bottle, follow him”. (it was all good though!).
While I was there a friend told me about a local tipper co (brilliant company) that were hiring in August so I went along, had a driving assessment and they offered me a job with only 2 weeks experience of tippers and now 3 months on I am loving it!
You need determination and a lot of luck, and often its not what you know its who you know, and what they know too lol.
