I used to work for a general haulage place where one of the contracts was to collect the personal belongings of uni students. They would fly home and we would ship all their effects back.
I did one in London which was 3 floors up. The two young ladies were very helpful and we got sorted in about 45 minutes. When I checked there was nothing left and said goodbye, one of them handed me some folded cash and told me her dad instructed her to tip me if I was a “good sort”.
I popped it straight in my pocket, thanked her and off I went. I didn’t look at it until I was back on the M25 only to find £50.
I didn’t tell the boss as he was about to get a phone call to tell him I’d been given a £50 parking fine lol.
East Trans at Immingham were always good with appreciation, as were Yara on the docks. Fantastic work that I miss very much.
I’ve had a few tips here and there but usually for jobs that are straightforward rather than the ones where someone want’s something awkward, rare and potentially valuable moving like an aircraft cockpit or anti aircraft gun.
Did a short trip with a yacht trailer this week = £20 in my pocket. First tip I’ve had for a while though.
Did a job a couple of years ago lifting constructional steel into place for a bloke building an extension on his house, was really a job for a mobile crane rather than a Hiab but I got the job done safely and efficiently. Usual cheers mate type thank you but sadly no monetary tip. A couple of weeks later I spotted a hand written letter in the office from this chap saying how pleased he was with the job I’d done. I was quite pleased to see that, although I’d have been more pleased if the office had actually mentioned it rather than reading it upside on the bosses desk
I usually get a thanks off two of the bosses…I only do a couple of days a week, but if I finish and they are in the office when I take in the notes, they always say thank you.
It means more to me than the money to be honest.
I always thank them for the work as well.
Okay it’s the job you’re employed to do, but it’s always nice for somebody to show some appreciation for your efforts, it’s also good manners.
It’s always good working in motorsport when the racing drivers or team bosses make an effort to say thanks at the end of the event, and in fact most do when it’s been a good event for them, but the real gentlemen will come and find you to say thanks even when they’ve had a real [zb] weekend or even take the team out for a few beers or a meal.
Used to get plenty of tips on home delivery, but since moving over to trunking all I get is hassle.
Still get the occasional thanks, usually from the same office bod. The rest are just ■■■■■■■■■■
Yes ! I once had to deliver 5t of bright bar to a little engineering firm in Lewisham, at the rear of some shops with no access for my lorry. I helped the owner handball the 5t up an alleyway, took well over an hour and he gave me 20p “get yourself a cup of tea”.
I don’t know whether he felt the 20p hit him as I drove away.
My immediate boss doesn’t know a lot about transport, or indeed HGVs in general.
Three minutes late and, as a previous poster mentioned, it’s like having a tonne of bricks dropped on ya!
But do they notice the times I open up shop and get in 1.5 hours early (off my own back - I don’t put in for the overtime) to make sure the job’s done to the best of my ability? Haha, we all know the answer to that. Just to clarify, these are times that the warehouse staff ‘haven’t had time’ to load the vehicle, so I tell my supervisor I’ll get in (I’ll be on my own, btw) stupid early and load it myself.
What gripes me is that I’m on a salary and really don’t mind doing this if it helps us run successfully, but when you’re not recognised, and as mentioned above, get told off over the odd ‘three minutes’ here and there, that does strike a nerve.

I dropped a skip off one morning to an Asian gentleman swung it in over his garden wall he gave me 50p and said get yourself a pint. I gave it back to him and said I don’t drink pints of milk.
i usually try to thank my drivers at the end of each week
one of them did me a favour on friday afternoon as i had to finish early, i was in the yard today and noticed his lorry needed washing, so i washed it for him
a quick ‘thank you’ takes nothing, but, can mean a lot

Went to this place on Friday, went in all smiling and happy, did what needed to be done and then was thanked for my assistance. Got back to the office and was asked how I got on with that particular client as they were known for not being easy to get on with. Was chuffed
