Any tips for driving in snow/ice

you cant really rock a auto

Our auto Volvos have a ā€œRock Modeā€ bit like programming a bloody computer, but cant wait to give it a go. :open_mouth:

Does it also have an Easy Listening and Contemporary Jazz mode?

In my opinion diff lock is the worst thing that you can use if you are stuck, its better to get out of the cab and pour a bit of grid under the tyres and then try to move.

Oh and as well, when you stop for the night pour grid under tyres and if possible move the lorry a bit forward after 40-50 min, because the tyres are warm when you finish driving and they melt the ice under them, and you might struggle the next morning.

Christ there are some weird ideas popping up in this thread. You do know how diff lock works don’t you?

If you have a look at the eddie stobarts series video, where the girl gets stuck when driving up the hill, how do you think why did the unit start going sideways?

Because of the diff lock, thats why, when you turn it on, the differential blocks the axle 100%, and if the surface is not even, the lorry will start to drift away, and thats why its easier to get out of the cab and pour some grid under the tyres.

I think Switchlogic has hit the nail on the head here.

To be fair, was it last year or the year before the rock steady Eddie programme was on? How did folk manage before that little fairy tale tv tantalizer to gee up the public love of Yorkie munchers get on?

I’d hardly be looking at the Stobart programme as an example of how to drive. Diff lock has got me out of many sticky situations. I’m sorry but you are talking rubbish.

I drove a truck last year in the snow, and the diff lock wasn’t working. Didn’t get properly stuck, but was a flipping nightmare everywhere i went. Had my normal truck back the next day and the difference with the diff lock working was massive.
Think you’ve just got to be sensible where you use it.

The lady in the stobart video didn’t realise she should have had her middle axle up to improve her traction, I doubt she would have known what dif lock is let alone to swith it on. The whole point of dif lock is to help in low traction situations unless all the truck manufacturers are wrong.

Does anyone know what the recommended speeds are for dif lock, I’ve been told, you don’t want it on above like ten mile an hour as something goes pear shaped.

A lot of 6x2’s have a weight transfer button to transfer the weight off the mid lift on to the rear axle to improve traction when you’re loaded and can’t actually raise the mid lift.

Maintain your momentum if possible, once you stop you could be screwed.

I agree with no cruise control either, if you hit a patch of ice, you are hedged, no problem.

If you are stuck, wheel spinning the ā– ā– ā– ā–  out of it probably won’t help you, just get to the clutch bite in a manual annd coast along or if you’re in an auto, tough.

Diff lock is nothing to do with traction - it’s to help keep the unit running in a straight line while you send a text message or pull the foil off the top of a Pot Noodle.

What is this ā€œgridā€ you speak of . . is it some kind of magic potion ?

you know that stuff they use to keep chickens in and foxs out, maybe you have to wrap it round your tyres like snow chains or something

Cant get the image of somewon dressed as a wizard out of my head, muttering ā€œwing of bat,eye of newtā€
whilst pouring the magic ā€œgridā€ under the tyres and then driving off !!

If you are going to sod about in Tilbury power sliding in the snow and ice. remember to drop the trailer first!

.

in my opinion you are unaware of what the difflock can do and how to use it to its full potential,

The biggest problem that most drivers seem to have in snow and ice is thinking that giving it bags of welly with their right foot will get them out of trouble, and while they are slipping everywhere I will creep past on just over tickover, with the difflock in and a higher gear than normal

just get to the clutch bite in a manual annd coast along or if you’re in an auto, tough.

You can do that with an auto. They all have clutches and they all have a biting point, it’s just on a different pedal to a manual.

He saud tough if you’re in an auto!

But it ain’t tough, it’s just as much an option in an auto.
