Here’s a fine pair to start the new week off. But where are they? Alps. Mount Snowden. Mount Ararat. Answers on a post card please to…
I`ll haver a guess at Sicily and that hill behind you is Mount Etna!
Now thats an interesting one bullitt. I have no idea where the picture was taken but we had lorries in Sicily from time to time. I thought I had solved the riddle when I saw an almost exact picture of a mountain (minus the lorries) in desktop pictures on my MacBook Air. However, after checking I found that was a picture of Mount Fuji. Even Promotor not been there.
My first thoughts were Mount Ararat in Eastern Turkey on the way to Iran but as I have never been there I was waiting for somebody like Bestbooties, M.& C. Jamie, Jazzandy or John West to find out if they had recognised the area.
Regards Steve.
Yes, I thought maybe Mount Ararat. I travelled that route to Tehran many years ago. Always alone or so I thought but maybe the little grey cells really are letting me down and there were two of us. No No. I might be going gaga but thats definitely not my lorry there and I’m still not convinced its Mount Ararat.
Drew the curtains this morning to find my privacy was being invaded by these two looking over the hedge. The feed lorry was making an early morning call.
Don’t think it’s Ararat as there’s no sign of it’s sister volcano.
This might be a job for the Trucknet C.S.I.
Andy, depending on which angle the photographer took the photo the smaller volcano might be just off the picture to the right. I have tried to find the area where the trucks may of been parked at the time and my guess was that it might of been somewhere around here. If any body has a look on Google Earth, the coordinates are 39degrees 32’ 57.41" N , 44degrees 13’02.81
I am afraid that I am not computer savvy enough to transfer it on to Street View so maybe somebody can.
Having said that I thought that this was where the photo was taken I also agree with Bullitt that it could be Mount Etna because going by their registration numbers I think that it would of been very unlikely that they were on their way to Iran as trade sanctions would of been in place in the early eighties.
Regards Steve.
Hello Mushroomman. Thats a very good bit of detective work. I think you could be right. When you look at the contours of the area around Mount Ararat some of it fits quite nicely with the photo of the two lorries. Promotor was running to Tehran in the early 80’s. Not sure if I have the exact dates but will look. We organised a huge British presence at The Tehran Trade Fair as sanctions at that time were coming to an end. I remember doing a load out there for that event. We also did work to the British embassies dotted around delivering furniture. Two that spring to mind were Moscow and Cairo so maybe Tehran featured as well.

Yes, we were doing embassy work in 82, Sandway. I did a load to the Bucharest and Ankara embassies and the Consulate at Istanbul around May 82. In fact I got held up at the Bucharest embassy by the May Day holiday. I had just got back from Baghdad and had to turn around to go out on that trip. So the trucks may have been on their way for a delivery to the Teheran embassy.
Do any of you remember The Brit Inn, the pub that was at The British Embassy in Bucharest. It was only open on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sunday nights and you had to show your British passport to the ex sergeant major who was the security/doorman before he would let you inside. It was only a small place, I can never remember seeing more than 30 people in there, they always made you welcome and they sold draught Tenant’s lager at duty free prices. On a Sunday night they used to put a white bedsheet on the wall and show a film. I remember seeing a Woody Allen film called Annie Hall one night on a 16mm projector. Happy days.
Regards Steve.
Only went there once or twice. To many years ago to remember much about it let alone what beer was on offer. However, I do remember going to the American Club, or was It Uncle Sams in Belgrade where the T Bone steaks were 3 inches thick!! Well they would be wouldn’t they.

I went to the British embassy in Belgrade, the club there was run by a Scottish bloke, ■■■■?, after a couple of beers he suggested we go to the American embassy, the U.K. Embassy was a room downstairs whereas the USA club had a burger cafe, restaurant and a couple of bars, that was a good way to waste a weekend.

The American embassy club in Belgrade also did a brilliant home made cherry pie and cream, to follow up the T’ bone. It was a good night out. But, as they had problems with some drivers who had been there, we used to tell them that we were exhibition site rep’s and were staying at The National. It was close to the truth of course.
In my last post I should have said “any info Steve aka flyingflash007”. There are to many Steves about and here is another one.
Stevie Smith joined Promotor in the early 70’s. He left the company after a few years but rejoined again in the 80’s and was still there at the beginning of the 90’s. He lived at Canvey Island and the last report I read of him he was living in Spain. The picture of him was taken in 1989 or 1990. He was on his way to Israel with Graham “Blue” Bertram.

Steves brother-in-law, mick Mitchell, was on there as well, Micky was a coach driver as well but his downfall was the demon drink, he had coke cans in the cab with vodka in them and was drinking all the way, when he was driving coaches he had them lined up on the dash so the passengers never knew he was drinking, It should come as no surprise that he is now dead, I think his internal organs all gave up.
When I last saw Steve he said he was looking at a place in Spain but I don’t know if he went there, but I do know he was a bit keen on it so who knows?
Sandway, Stevie Smith is , and has been living in Spain for at least 10 yrs, maybe 15, but, unfortunetly now drives a wheelchair, not in the best of health.
I heard a tale many years ago that Stevie had a cousin called Slim (I believe he may have done a bit of work for Promotor) who, if you where having a problem with someone, could be relied on to put the frightners on them. I heard he only had to look them in the eye and utter his famous expression “I’m gonna bite yer face” for them to back off pronto. If that isn’t the case Mr Slim I apologise most profusely.

Having a senior moment there, your right he was Stevens cousin not bro in law and yes his nickname was slim but as for putting the frighteners on someone I’d have been a bit more wary of Steve, Mick was always too ■■■■■■ to give serious grief, Bobby (aka crack on to Macon) told me Steve was known as the Bow basher, he was a bit handy.
