There are drivers turning up for £5.40 ph (Check out the Jobcentre Website for NE10)
£6.00 is about average for the better companies if you can get more than that your doing well.
davey, just before i left FWCC to move down here, there was talk of them opening a new depot near to where peter cooks place at durham is.
that could explain the need for the extra drivers your on about m8.

Thats a Top Secret Mission Terry
All we know is FWC paid a deposit on land and the Surveyors are currently doing land surveys to see that the ground is suitable for building on, another rumour says the site is within 5 miles of the A1
Even The best Irish Navvies couldn’t build a new Place that quick
I used to work for D J Ponsonby in birmingham.
When they packed up they were in a trucking mag alongside thorburns from Liverpool, saying that they had packed up aswell.
But you still see thorburns thundering up the motorway at 70mph.
Its just a tax fiddle most of these firms packing up.
They are called Joe Bloggs one day then go broke. Then called Joe bloggs and best mate the next day.

saw a fare few of paul aurthurtons motors from east anglia for sale in comercial motor this week 54 and 55 plate dafs and scanias one was an r series topline.they seem a bit new for to get rid of so has he decided to pack in aswell
He seems to have a clear out on a regular basis, I think he runs a truck sales department as well. He used to ship his trucks in from europe at european prices, run them for six months (which the law requires) and still sell them on at a profit, or at least that’s how it was explained to me

Apparently hes gone belly up so i was informed the other day, from 24 trucks, down to 5.
He used to be a salesman at Daf at Norwich, then decided to have a go on his own, i met one of his loading groupage in Prato, Italy couple of years ago, think he was on for Heritage of Dover.
Reckon its a case of trying to get too big too quick meself.
I know most of Alec Petch drivers and office staff, Alec and John have been going for a long time, its always a shame to see old companies go bust.
I was quite surprised by the story in Commercial Motor saying the company had assets of less than £30k
Seems as though the container work was just not paying
Wheelnut - £30k I knew that even though they ran a fleet of newish motors and that they were leased, but I thought that they owned their yard and that it would be worth more than that.
containers hasnt really paid for the last few years

Thats what I thought, it seems strange that CM would put this information in a story,
What surprises me is that with all the work around your area they hadnt tried something else. I know they had a couple on Hygena when they bought Eric Bulliments but I didnt see them lately.
When I worked for Petch’s they pulled for Hygena but it was subbing through Sid Cooper’s. I was chatting to one of Petch’s drivers on the cb the other week and he said that since Geest took over the container side of Seawheel they’ve only been getting shortish runs and no longer distance work, so this probably had a bearing on it.

Container work has never paid I know from experience… and thats going back to the 70’s. it has always been the lowest paid, even in them days
a 20’ container from southhampton to liverpool was 75.00… 2… containers on a 40’ was 105.00 was ok if u got a quick turn round but never did. in them days it was a day down a day back and 2 days waiting at the docks it was the load down that paid not the containers back… that paid for the diesel back and wages and in those days the best companies went bust
I worked for Nuttlalls of cliffton M’c you can see their old depot heading west going up death valley on the M60 the slip road to Swinton they had going on 150 Tucks at that depot with depot all over UK and Scotland.
total number of trucks around 500 in 1969 the total profit them made was just over 5 pound per motor… shortly after they sold out in the 70’s
those where the days drivers were drivers, comradship was unbelaveable if anything went wrong you was never on your own, there was always drivers there to help you out… today they well just run over you rather than stop and help you out… they call that progress
alix776:

NEVER PAID IN 42 YEARS… NOT JUST A FEW YEARS… THERE AS BIN MORE COMPANIES GONE BUST PULLING CANTAINERS THAN I CAN REMEMBER
KEEP GOING DONT STOP

some firms running some top motors on it though but then again as stated above it soon catches up with you.
