Anglo Greek

Hi gavin

More pics would be great. I hear there is now bridge outside Patras where the little ferry used to be to take you to the Thessalonica road!! Ive been off the i
international work for nearly 4 years and its great to see so many pictures and stories on the forum

Thanks Colin

Hi Colin one of the pics I have is I think from that quay Iā€™ll scan them and post them. Its 10/11 years since I stopped running abroad. I wasnā€™t making any money come the finish and got bored with the same roads,I thought about Russia but I was too old for the aggro!
Gavin

I never got chance do M/E but if the money was right i would give it a bash. Russia was good for me as i was in my mid twenties and it was an adventure away from the building sites!! I met loads of guys out that way who had done M/E and a few are on this forum

Iā€™ve just posted some pics and they have disappeared (probably swamping another thread) Iā€™ll try some again.
This is not the one of that quay, itā€™s Patras

I think this might have been at the customs after the copper factory near the sinking bridge. Anyone recognize the DAF?

This pic is of an internal ferry either from the quay that you mentioned Colin , across to Andirrion(sometimes I used the one from Aiyion) or at Preveza

Some more to come.
Gavin

Some more.
Tea break in northern Greece

I had either just been there or was just going there!

same again.

One for Scania lovers pretty or what?

Gavin

Is that the rabbit mobile? They are cracking photos

Hi Guys

I was under the impression the steel Bridge over the corinth was a british army bally infact two of them some one correct me if im wrong but they look like the bridges I errected during my service for Queen and Country,Canal was dug by french convicts with over 100 loss of life.and was dug by hand no machines.

Roger Haywood

Hi Roger, They do look like bailly bridges, is it your fault they wobble then? :unamused:

Gavin McArdle:

   Hi Gavin,
I am sure that if Roger had built that bridge then it wouldnā€™t wobble, he would of used a beer mat  .
I really enjoyed the photoā€™s and interesting commentā€™s from everybody about the Corinth Canal, please keep them coming.
Yes Gavin you are right, I think that the border I used that time was called Kaluta.
I canā€™t think where aboutā€™s in Greece the second and third photo in the last batch were taken  .
You might think that I am having a Senior Moment but it reminds me of going over The St Gotthard Pass in Switzerland  .

Has anybody seen my marbles
Regards Steve.

Hi Guys

You flaming numpty heads I didnt say I had errected the bridges myself just that they looked like the bridges I used to errect .wernt they just wonderful british engineering at its best the bashing they have taken and still as strong as ever ,Most of the greatest bridges in the world are designed and built by us ,such a shame we are going down hill now

Nice to see a picture of Keith ā€œedspedsā€ Headleys Daf Gavin, Lovely old motor and a credit to him. Heā€™s another 1 in the TIR parking upstairs God Bless him, I last saw him being carried away by Oā€™leary in Glyfada after Keith and Myself had discovered Morgans Spiced Rum!!! Big John struggled to get him back to hotel Daf, whilst I got carted off by a Glyfada bar maid, seem to remember going to honk out of the taxi window but hadā€™nt put the window down!!! One unhappy bar maid & a Bubble cab driver throwing a right old fit, seem to remember plenty of ā€œMalakasā€ being used at me!!! Oh well happy days.

the bar you are on about in glyfada was called the FORGe, and yes ,her name was audrey

Hi all Oh dear thatā€™s got sinbin jumping!
You could well be right mushroomman I did go over the Gotthard just to see what it was like, they were in the same folder as the Greek pics, I did wonder about the flyover, a bit technical for the Greeks at that time!
Flysheet you are right about Keith Headlyā€™s DAF (RIP) I had forgotten his name. I remember him having a bearing break up in the trailer hub which split the casing, we went into the ships chandlers in Keratsini and bought some huge jubilee type clamps we had a set of bearings between us, so we fitted them and put the clamps over the splits and he drove home. I think it was this trip because I ran home with him, I never saw him again before he died. But I think you are wrong about the nickname, the ā€˜Edspedā€™ that I knew was Eddie Nixon who had the ex Turkish Scania and later went to work for Birdā€™s in Brum.
AS old age seems to be winning I had better say I THINK that these pics are of Igoumenitsa! Does any recognize the Daf I met him a couple of times IIRC, he used to have to shut the door very gently!

hi guys

The owner of that Daff was called RUSTY I think, and GAVIN I dont jump over anything my knees are shot to pieces and my brain and the rest of me I dont care you all love me realy say yes or I will be

hi roger, Iā€™ve just remembered that somewhere in all the crap collected over the years Iā€™m sure thereā€™s a photo of you and a load of other drivers taken in the diner in st nicks in piraeus (not panniotis but the other one with the steep steps) I will try to find it if the wife hasā€™nt chucked it and put it along with a few more on this thread.
Iā€™ve just put a post on the ACH topic which you might care to read and tell me if you agree with my later comments in it.

Hi chazzer, could that of been The Lantern Cafe in St Nicks Piraeus, a huge car park where the ferry boats used to sail from to go to The Greek Islands between 80/87ish  .

mushroomman, you could well be right about the name Lantern Cafe, all I can remember is that it was opposite st nicks where we used to park the trucks before they started putting flowerbeds and benches on it and banned trucks from it.
Iā€™m glad Archie started this topic and hope a few more greek regulars drop in on it especially those who drove or subbed for other forwarders such as Mondial, Intersped and Solar Marine or Sealandair.

I remember a barmaid in Glyfada named Sue and think she was going out with one of them godamn Yanks :stuck_out_tongue: I also remember a trip out to Agistri on the speed ferry where we found the nudist beach after hiring some honda 50ā€™s

It was during the elections in Athens, everything was in turmoil and Ron the Con and Theo advised a few of us to get away. We left the trucks parked on the tourist dock & ended up staying in a hotel owned by the only policeman on the island, he seemed to own everything on the island :stuck_out_tongue:

Chazzer, a few names that have popped up in your postā€™s Radcliveā€™s, Dow Freight, Lantern Cafe, Dave Shirley ( could that be Mickā€™s brother ? ). I am wondering if you are Big Alex, Micky D, Colin W, Nick or The Minnow.
Regards Steve.

I remember a Scouser who had a new red and white Iveco who I think was on for Assured Freight. Was it Joe? Anyone remember who I mean?
