An hour each way commute too much?

eagerbeaver:
Is there much driving work available where the OP lives though?

Please don’t try and bring logic to TNUK mate!

I did an hour each way for the last 4 years and no never again. Is the new job a pay increase? You’ve got to factor in your commuting costs and deduct that from your monthly or weekly pay and then work out if it’s actually worth it or not. Also that’s 10 hours a week on top of the job as others have said. Unless it’s the perfect job in every other way then the commute can start to get you down. Trust me, the novelty wears off and just a pain in the arse!

Agreed. If you’re going to commute those distances every day, you need a large car with an automatic gearbox and which is quiet and comfortable at speed, and you need to be earning enough extra to pay for the luxury car, the fuel, the insurance, and the 5-6 hours a week of additional commute. It’s uncommon in my experience to be offered this sort of additional compensation to make it all worthwhile.

Blimey what planet is this where we can turn down jobs that are more than a few miles from home.My 20 years of commuting between around Leatherhead to Feltham often involved stop start rush our traffic increasing the journey time to sometimes even more than an hour.Let alone the two or three different bus journeys needed to get there. All that for nothing special in terms of wages and under a mixture of ‘Labour’ and Con governments and I wouldn’t touch an automatic motor thanks I can’t stand the things. With the manual 2.8i Granada being probably my favourite commuting motor. :smiling_imp:

lol… I wish at the moment close on 7hrs on a sunday to the camp usually try for away 2weeks but due to weather recently home on a Friday afternoon(work truck for travelling) BUT in about 3 weeks time its going to be 14hr journey to work so f that for a game of soldiers I will be living at camp until they finish the chipping.then after a month move camp it will be a 16hr camp move to new location X 2 :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:
mind this is still classed as local work in Canada on highway maintenance.

Seeing as we’re talking 21st century England, that hour commute could be 5 miles.

It would have to be superstar wages, and a shift length of no more than 10 hours for me to consider it seriously.
