there is, or was, a Kenworth dealer in Strasbourg.
the other thing about buying in France over America, if you buy a relatively new US truck from America, it is unlikely that you would get it type approved for UK haulage use, whereas, if you buy the equivelent vehicle from France, it will already have EU type approval, and therefore get UK type approval for UK haulage use
this is what i have been led to believe from a conversation with someone who runs an American truck
hi boys,
a good thread you have got going here.this is a picture of mine in the lobbo truckwas in anzegem belgium last july.

airbrush artist, chris gadd did the artwork for me.this was taken in dunkirk.
there’s a guage for everything on this dash, they need that in the usa because of the weather extremes.axle temperatures, three for the exhaust, etc etc, there was a large roof spoiler on the sleeper when i bought it,even that had a bloody guage!!
Mr Peterbilt
I think it’s time we had some decent shots of your rig.
regards
sorry boys, wrong photo, this is the dash.

Anyone interested in Yank tanks French importer Truck Isere Rhone sells them and they are not cheap but they do seem to last for years.Kenny’s and Andrew’s favourite Peterbilt are all for sale and a few other choice rigs. And before you ask the French don’t worry too much about length although they do occasionally get fined.
I imported this in 2008 in a container from California as you can see it has to be stripped down a bit to get it in a std 40’.Cost was $5000 to Grain then the haulage up to the Midlands on top. As its a 1954 I paid no duty on the truck but a fair bit on the parts I had with it. It is registered as a historic vehicle and so is MOT exempt but there are limitations to use. Obviously a cabover cant be done the same without the cab removed.Mark

There was a deler in Ipswich at one time who imported vehicles on spec but left the dealing with the UK up to you. I think you had to pay him the duty up front, too. I will try to find out about it. That said, if you are buying on spec alone then look at the auto trader websites and see what there is available. If it is for show purposes and you are going to tidy it up yourself there are myriad choices out here, but lots get sent south when they are 5 or 6 years old. If you find a dealer who exports to the south then he will probably be able to ship it and keep your hassle factor down.
If you are looking for something to show straight away then it will be really pricey. Petes and W900s hold their value well so it will not be cheap, but the Volvos are old hat and the FLTs are a bit boring.
Re the 12v/24v thing. There is an additional beauty to having 12 v systems. You can (I have done this) jump start them with a car. I managed to get the old KW to start with my buick, although I did run the engine heater for an hour before trying it. It also will jump from a 75 amp starter pack. There are other advantages, such as inverters and the fact that your electrics don’t run as hot, but that is moot.
Not the UK,but might give you some more ideas. Visit www.american-trucks.fr I was in there last year, some nice examples for sale. Located south of Clermont Ferrand (A75) if you’re in the neighbourhood. Yvan Gaillard. Le Chapeau Rouge.63500.Issoire. I would guess these comply with the regs, given their popularity -esp,with the O/O’s. I believe Yvan has a trucking company and is also a bit of a hot-shoe on the truck racing circuit,as well.
