I drove one of these for Henthorn of Blackpool in the early 70s and can remeber clouting my elbow on the back of the cab when changing gear, was it just me?

Found while going through internet-- Here’s another but with greedy boards for the movement of coal & coke.

found this lovley old photo of a New Albion at MSF ( now Countrywide ) Presteigne depot, its a crying shame to see the mill when new, compared to whats left now.

bringing back happy memoris, one of our Albions when new.

another Albion in working condition at a sheep sale.

In the 50’s the Albion Reiver’s double drive bogie was very sensitive to tyre size, no I don’t mean mixing 9.00 X 20’s with 10.00 X 20’s, but tyre wear when you could not just put a new tyre on as the small difference in size was enough to cause massive overheating and many a Reiver needed the Fire Brigade as certainly a full Bladder was inadaquate…Tony.

Hiya… i had the sister to this one CRF522K i think richo had 5 of them.spot the log book in the screen

John

I have never driven one thankfully, but I have spent time in the passenger seat of the LAD cabbed Reivers, I remember my Dad not being too happy about having to take one to Doncaster (from the yard in London) so he got 5mins up the road, pulled into a side street & uncracked the wheelnuts of the driver’s side front wheel & turned around & went back to the yard, the fitters VOR’d it & we ended up going to Donny in an F86, much quicker & much quieter

Heres an old ad. for you John

lets hope it don’t rain

Hiya newmercman your F86 will have been faster then 70mph to keep up with the Albion tipper above she was a flyer.

The Albions were slower than the F86, but nothing on the firm could keep up with an AEC Marshall they had, it used to leave the old Midland Red coaches standing, a proper flying machine, it would go faster down the hill from J22 M1 northbound in gear than it would in Scotch Overdrive :sunglasses:

Dave the Renegade:
A firm called Hughes of Presteigne had the first LAD cabbed Albion Reiver around here,a six wheeler tipper in Nash Rocks Nash & Strinds quarries. S W Brisbane had one in 1961 CFO 597,followed by two more in 1965. Old Radnor Trading Co ran one from 1964 out of the Gore and Dolyhir quarries,it was involved in an accident about two years later and written off.
Here’s a nice example pictured at Gaydon this sommer.Still a fine looking lorry.

Hello Dave very interesting stuff .Didnt Knills of Penybont have a few Reivers as well ? I do remember they had AEC Mammoth major 8 wheelers on stock work that wre ex London Brick Co cheers KK

Hi KK,
Yes Knill’s of Crossgates had an Albion reiver on bulk coal haulage,it was an ex Breeze of Llandrindod Wells lorry, who were coal merchants. Knill’s ran quite a few new lorries, such as K series Dodge V8 artics for a while, which never lasted long, before going back to older kit, some the AEC eight leggers which you mention.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave thanks for that you are a mine of information regards KK
