Agency lies

lgamston:
Got a txt on friday confirming i was in said company this week monday-friday so i did my shift yesterday as normal. Gone back this morning to said company for 6.00am to be told i am not down for working today and when i’ve spoke to agency today its my fault and wont be getting paid for turning up because they always confirm for definetly every afternoon, but clearly stated on the txt friday mon-friday at said company and now they’ve phoned this afternoon offering work at another crap local company for tomorrow. Get me back full time this agency crap aint for me lol.

Would you care to name both the agency and client ?

Agencies are nothing but cheap Pimps. Now I never minded in the past when I was being pimped out for a decent firm and a decent rate but in 2011 I’d had enough with wearing a peep hole bra under my hi viz.

:open_mouth: :open_mouth: Who the ■■■■ were you working for?? :open_mouth:

I walked out midway through signing up with the last agency I visited. Bird behind the desk gets a call cancelling a start time, so she rings a fella up and says sorry they cancelled your 2300, but I can get you in at 1900. Next thing she rings another bloke up and tells him his 1900 has been covered by in house ot :unamused: I got up and she says we aren’t done. I said I am, and when she asked why, I told her because I didn’t want to be behind that poor fella in the pecking order :imp:

Sorry if been done before but how far do agencys expect or want you to travel for work? Be helpful if Pertemps maybe posted what they offer drivers rates conditions etc maybe post in the wannabe driver section to say what they could possibly offer them, though guess they’d need a strong tin hat if they do post mind  Maybe the next sponsors gonna be Marmite!

You travel as far as you want to and you tell them whether you want to do the job or not. If it’s too far then you say no. Simple enough.

My self imposed limit was around 30 miles from home

Yeah you can definitely turn it down if to far, I just wondered if they try to constantly send people miles away from their base/home? Couple of plant driving jobs I did in the past were a bit of a trek but others were reasonable Personally I see Agencies to be used and abused really, I did a job while on holiday from a previous fulltime job to get a bit of experience, didn’t matter if I was crap could just carry on day job no harm no foul, and did a few days after being made redundant just a stop gap really. I had no commitments back then though so didn’t really matter. But if I end up in the ■■■ again I’d use them again they keep texting anyway, just reply if you want to eh!

30 miles seems within reason imo

Iv always avoided agency’s like the plague ever since getting messed about by them when I first started driving… but nowadays is it me or does it seem like the agencies hold all the cards in terms of jobs available? Firms very rarely recruit themselves now (the big outfits anyway) and find it much easier to use agency’s to see who makes the cut and who they can keep… it’s tempting when you see the ■■■■■■■■ they advertise but it is bull ■■■■ never the less

With an agency - you can get a temp to perm contract, having tried out a whole bunch of different jobs at different clients beforehand.

“More Options” then.

YOU must dictate the terms on going into the agency for the first time - and be prepared to spin on your heel if you don’t get what you want.

I did this with “Manpower” who refused to offer me “Only work at my previous employer” - because that was on good money. Everything else they had at other non-RM clients was crap.
I didn’t get any work out of manpower in the end. Good job there were other agencies I could move on to then!

If Manpower had been the “only” agency in the country - they could get away with everything from paying crap wages to sticking drawing pins on your seat each day. You’ve got nowhere else to go for work! :open_mouth:

Although I have now been retired almost two years, I still like to look and see what jobs are going purely out of interest, and I am amazed at the amount of Agency’s there are now advertising jobs, but a bit closer look tells you that they are all advertising the SAME jobs, every Agency for 50 miles wants drivers for ES at Goole, Yeardsleys at Grimsby, DHL at Scunthorpe and Bawtry etc etc , the same jobs on every day, common sense tells you that there just cannot be that many jobs going and they are just collecting names IN CASE they need someone, the Jobcentre Website is just a free advertising board for them, dozens of non existing jobs, they are parasites nothing more, and the one at the top of the page is just as untrustworthy as the rest of them.

The mind boggles at some of the la-la land stuff you post.

Of course you have other places to go for work, even if Manpower were the only agency in the country. You could get a CV together, load your kit in the car and have a drive around the various employers in your areas and try to get a proper job, rather than rely on the easy way out of signing up with one of these parasitic boils on the backside of the haulage industry.

I thought the same tbh.

Every time agencies are on here you get drivers saying how bad they are so why do you keep working for them?
Until I stopped driving I work for agencies for about 6 years with no problems, you have to tell them what you want and stick to it so if you want work at Blogs haulage turn down other work when they work out you mean it they will give you all the work they have at Blogs. If you will work everywhere they will send you everywhere.
Same with holiday pay if your not getting it that’s you fault have you asked I always got it. If I ever have to come back to driving it will be though agency for the freedom it gives.

I’ve got this thought about what’s really wrong with any agency, or any office anywhere come to that:

SALARIED culture.
If you get paid the same for turning up to work, being off sick, not getting things done, etc. then guess what - you’re going to quickly lapse into a manager that can’t be arsed to jump through the hoops of others all the time, and put themselves out - all for “no extra”.

This, in turn - leads to “management inefficiencies”, and that leads on to a general apathetic way of doing things.
“Don’t rock the boat” you’ll be told when approaching a manager about “saving the firm some money”.

All they end up considering for “saving money” - is cutting the payroll bill. Great.

“Them and Us” is being stretched to breaking point by the inability to work together with staff to get rewarding efficiency savings in place - I suggest. :bulb:

Ive worked agency for the past 12m at the same agency on the same job. The money is better than my previous full time job by a margin. 3 shifts agency on this job is better paid than 5 days previous full time job. I get anywhere between 3-5 days work a week on this particular job, so its a no brainer, 3 days work pays same as 5 days previously & 4 or 5 days is Happy Days. I occasionally may do a day elsewhere but thats only if I want to & those days are few &far between. I have a good working relationship with my contact at the agency who knows Im straight down the line in everything I do & I expect this to be reciprocated, which it is, barring the odd hiccup / human error. Ive worked for 1 or 2 other agencys in the past who werent upto it frankly & so moved on until fortunately I found an agency that is with me. I speak as I find.
