0AV.690. 11.3s, But only a 5 speed box 37mph, slow but good on the beechams pills, also they had good brakes, Regards Larry
I was talking to my dad last week ,he had a 59 mkv mm with the 9.6 and 5 speed box pulling a Dyson drawbar trailer at top weight he reckoned 38 mph was max but it was deafening. It once took him 14 hours to get from Bradford to London ,they had a few that spec and a couple were refitted with 6 speed boxes and it transformed them.He told me he
d lost count of the hills it refused with the trailer on.Another great picture by the way
Lawrence Dunbar:
0Well these ones were no problem they pulled very well even with 20 Ton fire bricks, Oh we were naughty in those days, & lucky to we never got captured, & got extra in the old pay packet too. but mind you they never looked over loaded, Regards Larry
So the 11.3 with a 6 speed would be the best of both worlds then for that period it seems like a no brainer .
Another excellent photo but it does look a bit like a cattle truck at the front end with the head stuck out

I had a 1966 reg MK5 Mammoth Major 526 GYG,ex Cawoods Oils. It had the 2AV690 engine and 6-speed box, like a lot of the late MK5s and would pull and go like a train. It was uprated to 26t gross and the extra 2 tons didn’t make any difference, still went the same. It made a difference to the steering though and it was decided to put the power steering back on,it was removed when it was bought secondhand.
Hiya…a up!!! can any of you lads remember if the clutch pedel was very heavy…i seem to think when
i was adams the clutch pedel was light as a feather but this mm6 of mine my head hits the roof
before the pedel starts to go down i’ve not investigated much at the moment but i’ll need to sort

Eyup John,I don’t recall a MK3 or a MK5 with a clutch as heavy as that installed on your MK5.They were nice and light.
Get some more studs in yer boots pal.
Chris have you seen the aec’s i put on the butlers thread

Hi Paul,I missed them pal,I’ll have a look.I’m sure they were still running AECs in 1979,6-leggers?
A few random AECs
Mr Murphy over Standedge
“Tin front” MK 3
And an AEC / Coles 6x6 Bridging crane
Aye the old Standedge Rd, the A62. great picture of the AECs, & the old smoke outlets for the Transpennine Railway, I first encountered the Standedge in 1957. Driving a Bedford 4wheeler loaded with 8 ton of Danish Bacon from Newcastle Quayside for delivery to Manchester, 2nd gear most of the way & the same when I got over the Floating Light bit, allways went left at the Horse & Jockey pub easier than going over Delph. Happy days Larry

That Wynns MM6 with the sleeper cab is a great looking truck. I think it was a factory fitted sleeper.
I’ve had a bit of a request from 'ol mate Bill aka LB76 for some AEC’s with trailers.
Here goes mate
Smashing stuff jamie mate, thanks a bunch for those - terrific ! bet that mm would have warmed up pulling that lot but then i suppose your motors were a different spec down there . we had a lot of trouble with over heating , and not just the aec’s either !

Would this have the AV1100 engine in it?
I can’t say for sure Ramone mate, but I don’t reckon it has got an AV11OO under the bonnet. It’s a bonneted Mammoth Major MK3 from the mid to late 50’s. I think it could have a 9.6 LTR or the 11.3 LTR straight six’s at 125 or 155 horse. Or it may have been fitted with the later AV690 with 190 horse.
As for NZ AEC’s being different spec ,well no they weren’t,not to start off with anyway. The AV760 was the motor of choice, you could spec them with a 13 speed Fuller, but lots had the AEC 6 speed box and some with the splitter giving twelve.
With most if not all MM8 pulling trailers the AEC box was not really suitable so many 6 speeds were fitted with 4 speed ‘joey’ or Auxiliary boxes mounted behind the gear box. Third gear in the ‘joey’ would have been the direct drive in the main box and I dont think you would use crawler in the main box when in second or fouth in the ‘Joey’. So this could give you a possible 16 gears, although I doubt if you would hook fouth gear in the ‘joey’ too often!
A 13 speed fuller would have been far easier to use.
As many of the 760’s clapped out probably due to over work and over heating after carting 40 tonne on logs or stock work. they were re-powered. Detroit Diesel straight six 671’s were a popular choice as were 250 ■■■■■■■ and 3406 CAT’s all mated up the the Fuller 13 speed. They made a good truck better.
This one has been restored in the last year and is fitted with a 671 and 13 speed.
This I’m lead to believe is the same truck, old number ‘one’ when working. It was re-powerd with the Detroit back in the early 70’s.
A great looking truck you have to agree.
