A E Evans ran a nearly 100% AEC fleet when I was there 1969-79,all secondhand of course.I got the first new tractor unit they bought,a Marathon 1976.
A couple of photos of my old pal Gordon Howarths’ Mandator in BP Chemicals Baglan Bay.YWW 983G was an ex LPG Morley unit and Evans bought it in 1972,still running in 1979.6000 gallon tank.
We did quite a lot of work out of Baglan Bay,toluene, styrene and vinyl acetate,Sheffield depot usually getting Ellesmere Port,Northwich,Stalybridge,Knottingley,Whitehaven and Immingham, although you could be sent anywhere, like Felixstowe,Hythe or Poole. The 3-axled MK5 tractor unit - a Mammoth Minor I suppose - was a cut down 8-legger and reg’d in 1970 AYH 701H for 32t gross on 5 axles. I took this particular wagon into Baglan Bay to load for Stallingborough sometime in late 1970 and it was surrounded by amazed Wincanton,Hemphill and Coastal Roadways drivers who had far newer tackle.

They were based down Chequers Lane at Dagenham Dock Ramone, near the Ford plant, main agents for John Hudson Fuel Oils plus they had a big tank farm as well.It was known as SWTT - Samuel Williams Thames Terminal.I loaded out of there several times int 70s,good loading as long as you had yer union card. They imported cars and steel amongst other things.

There are enough there to keep Chris and myself happy for quite some time. I’m nearly 80 now but I’d love to have a go in a Mk 3 or Mk V MM.
Of course, with my creaking bones getting mounted might be a tad difficult.
But I can dream
Who’s up for a go in a 2 stick Mk 3 MM ■■

J L Townson ran a few Mammoth Majors/Minors/Mandators/Mercurys back in the day (photo A Townson)
A couple of Mammoth Minors
The AEC Mammoth Major with 10 ton ballast block was used to tow the Cape Town trolleybus nearly 900 miles from Cape Town to the Johannesburg Transport Museum IN 1966.
A bit of a sad story unfolding on ‘Facebook’ chaps.
Yesterday this splendid 1961 Mandator based breakdown crane appeared in a Luxembourg scrap yard…
This morning someone went to save it, and found this sad sight…
You would have thought that something so obviously old and unusual would have been placed to one side for at least a day or two to see if it could be placed into safe hands, especially as I understand the person taking the photos told them that was his intention. Instead it appears they went out of their way to destroy it. It’s almost as though our European neighbours have no respect for British achievement, history or contribution to their own progression. Oh, hang on…

Indeed a most despicable act of destruction. It looked like a pretty straightforward restoration. What a shame.
For the collectioneurs amongst us…on marktplaats.nl (dutch ebay) quite some
orignal and english brochures on AEC and Leyland (with Ergomatic-cab) are offered.
