As others have said - walk away. There is no justification at all for employers to dock wages for accidental damage.
Bonus schemes which reward those who look after the motor are OK though - provided the bonus is just a small “extra” rather than making up a significant proportion of the total remuneration. You should exclude them from any calculations when weighing up a potential job. Same applies to harsh braking/fuel economy/tacho infringement bonuses. We have such a scheme at our place but it’s just a couple of hundred quid twice a year, which is about right IMO.
i had a car undertake me on the Linwood roundabout the driver was a manager for the Big transport company in the Glasgow area my outfit hire a yard and acess thro there yard my boss asked £1000 for the damage i told him to go and whistle so he gave me 6months writen warning instead i know other drivers that pay for their damage

But if i was to drive in to a building site and into a puddle that was deep and rip the tank off they are £800 therefore i am £80 down on my wage. ( this was an example the tm told me had happened).
The TM actually told you that they had done that to a driver already? I’d have been in my car and gone about ten seconds after. Presumably an unsuspecting bloke who’s driven into a puddle not realising it’s a crater and the firm charge him £80 for the privilege!!!
The sooner these tinpot two-bit outfits go out of business the better.
I worked at one place not long ago where the shunter reversed one into another, hard. He was so scared of getting sacked that he actually went into the office and OFFERED to pay for the the damage. When you’re up against colleagues like that there isn’t much hope.
Insurance is there to cover accidents. If the company is having so many claims that it can’t afford to pay the excess, maybe they are recruiting the wrong drivers. Serves 'em right- sod 'em
I think someone’s boss needs to look up the definition of bonus! The op isn’t being offered a bonus at all, you could argue that it’s a “non accident incentive” or whatever, but bonus it surely aint.
I think someone needs to learn to read - No-one has suggested that what was being offered to the OP was a “bonus” (although a few have mentioned bonus/incentive schemes as acceptable alternatives)…

So i spoke to the tm at this firm and told him my reasons why i wouldnt be taking the job, and asked him to explain the accident payments again. He said, 1st accident 10% 2nd accident 20% 3rd accident 30% 4 accident your out. After a year you are back to 0%. So i said that i would just be paying your excess, he told me that accidents that go thru the insurance i would not pay. Its to make me stop and think before making wrong decisions. And is basically for minor bumps that dont involve anybody else.
Against the grain i would consider this job, but only if it was renumerated at well over and above the normal rate.
Then i’d still wonder why they needed to instigate such a solution, if they pay the right terms and conditions and recruit carefully in the first place, then have proper disciplinary prcedures in place then this type of scheme isn’t necessary.
Was the job a well paid desirable one without this strange scheme?
I suspect its another chancer company paying crap wages trying to get proper lorry drivers on the cheap, lots of 'em think (wrongly) there’s a never ending supply of A1 drivers out there desperate for jobs.
