A57 snake pass

Dont think anyone’s mentioned it yet, but you can also go stockport - buxtion - a623 - chesterfiled into sheffield that way

I suppose I could’ve gone down the M6, across the A50, and up the M1 too.

If paid hourly id go.this way

I wouldn’t be keen to drive it at night, but during the day it is one of the prettiest routes in Britain. Just watch out for lunatic motorcycles and arrogant tipper drivers.

In tht case why not go A6 to Dove Holes, A623 to Baslow then drop over the tops into Sheffield. No low bridges and no traffic that time of night.

AA route planner…

Via Doveholes/Baslow 53.3 miles 1 hour 59 minutes.

Via Woodhead 47.8 miles 1 hour 14 minutes.

Yeah but Woodhead is shut at night and that way will drop you right into Sheffield on Meadowhall side.Use it regularly to and from Buxton.

Why not use the M62 a lot quicker, easier and more economical than the the Snake (A57). Used t run regularly from near Meadowhall to Trafford park and never used the A57 as in my humble opinion there is no point it’s just a waste of time.

 Sorry missed the bottom line of your post, take it from me you went the right way.

How the (rhymes with luck) did we get on before the M62 with 32 ton gross, 180 gardners and no abs, ebs, Retarders, exhaust brakes, b.u.m, t.i.t and all the other crap you’ve got now.

How did we cope when we used get bad snow? …we just kept calm and carried on taking care keeping your wits about you.

Now we got a couple of flakes the county grinds to a.halt…were.told not to travel.unless necessary

Not aware of any 7.5T limits on A57, but genuinely cant see why anyone would want to use that or Woodhead for that matter unless the delivery is right on the end or unless you have the office on tje phone moaning about it.

I know M62 is longer but having done admittedly not too scientific experiments with it, that road is just as quick as woodhead and presumably A57 realistically as you cant do 55 for large sections of either. Fuel ecnomy is horrific going over woodhead. Convincing the office is admittedly harder.

As for complaints about driving over woodhead slowly, some of us weren’t born driving gods so have to take it steady esp especially at night when you can see bugger all. Have learned to ignore the idiots sitting 3 inches off the backend on the odd occasions i now use it as i want to get there in a truck not a coffin.

I used to take a night trunk over there and to say I was surprised the first time I saw it in daylight would be an understatement. :open_mouth:

alternately could try A635 through Greenfield over Saddleworth moor to Holmfirth then B6196 over Hade Edge right onto A616 brings you out at flouch roundabout simples should be nice and quiet in the early hours and no real nasty bits

I used to run out of Macclesfield towards Buxton to get home. Job and knock nightwork so not afraid to say I used to give it the beans.

One night I had a flat earlier in the shift so I was going the same road but this time it was getting light and I could see the drops.

Suffice to say I took it a bit slower after seeing those lol

This is always quiet, even when the woodhead and M62 are royally ■■■■■■, bumpy road tho going towards Homfirth at the top

Now there’s a route I hadn’t thought of!. Don’t know why cause I used to use the A616 to get from Sheffield to Meltham quite often, it’s quite a nice drive, though during the day I used to avoid Holmfirth as it could get busy sometimes.
I use the roue sometimes when out for a ride on the bike, just for the sake of keeping off the motorways, it’s a pleasant route with a few nice bendy bits.
