If you cant park on the A14, maybe your company will pay for parking now.

Where you gonna pay for a 45 along there when everywhere is full?

It wasn’t meant as though closing lay by’s was a good idea.

My point was that his company should be paying to park their own truck unless this driver puts fuel in and pays for his own road tax and insurance from his wages.

Maybe if they cannot afford to pay the parking you could mention it to VOSA

Well either way, paying for parking is diverting quite a bit off topic. This is not a case of paying for parking. The servcies/truck stops along the A14 route are pretty full at the minute and you could not rely on getting a space in one. If the laybys go that reduces your chances even more. We seem to have complaints latley about drivers taking a 45 on the fuel pumps at services and drivers getting clamped when they park somewhere unsuitable at the services. They may all be connected?

But if you read Beakers post again, you will see that it was him who brought up the parking payment with his bosses. I was merely commenting on the first post of this thread

Well you’re right he did say it. But that wasn’t his topic and paying parking is (i feel) so far removed from what is happening here. (sorry if i’m going on!) The real issue is that if the laybys are closed it is going to have a real serious impact upon us all, well anyone who travells that route. I get parking paid so thats not a problem. Not not being able to stop along there either in or outbound is really going to be a problem. It flies in the face of all Government/saftey advice. For saftel we are recommended to take a 15 minute break every two hours of driving. The Government have their own target of a services every 30 minutes of normal travelling speed. Summat is not adding up? Given the percentages of vehicles service areas have to provide for travelling vehicles i’d say also the existing service areas are no where near the requirements for parking. Make you wonder howthey get away with it.

So will there be an exemption for not having a 45 now if you were on the A14. because as sure as hell, you won’t be able to get in the services now.

you are right Mike, my main problem is drivers not being able to stop for a break or any other reason. The parking issue is just another problem I face in my situation. I felt the majority of drivers would have an opinion to put forward based on the tacho break aspect. I wonder what Vosa would advise, I bet they will be about more once the closures occur ( cynical or what!)

if you are near your 4 half hours drive time you know where your stopping but can not get in you now need toilet can not get in you are quite within the law to keep going until you find a place to stop for health and safety reasons you dont want to zb yourself ther e is not a thing vossa or any one else can do about it you need a toilet it is a defence more so if there are not enough stopping places its your human rights mind you were drivers have we got human rights

I thought we signed away our human rights with the working time directive lol

Obviously I’m missing something here

Yes I agree that Lay bys should not be removed but surely travelling from the M1 across the A14 is not too much of a hardship when it comes to parking for a 45 minute break?

A1- A14 Jct Truckstop or has that gone now? Cambridge Xtra Services ? Truckstop / Cafe just off A14 near Newmarket or has that gone?, BP Garages on A14 then of course there is / was Bury St Edmunds Truckstop?
& Orwell Services?

I cant see how 45 minutes cannot be taken ?

Yes overnight parking problems but hey, if the law says you’ve got to stop then you’ve got to stop and if this means leaving the A14 and parking in residential areas the Councils will soon have to reconsider their decision to remove Lay by’s when the residents complaints start rolling in.

the bp garages near newmarket have no truck parking now…cafe near newmarket has limited parking(unless you mean the 1 at risby)bury truckpark is usually full or close to it by 5pm…same as orwell is full by 5pm.(oh yeah dont forget orwell if u go there go into reception and register other wise u will be getting clamped as the clampers van was on there the other day)

Jay what do you mean ‘register’ i never heard about that? You have to get your reg put on a register or summat to say you are on site?

Right at the minute its not to much of a problem, but sureley if they close all the laybys that will just ensure the existing services are definately full most of the time?

Its utter madness… if any one reads truck + driver mag, there was an article in there about lack of parking and closures of yet more truck stops…after alconbury… there closing the the one at willenhall i think it is…too

Them there lay by s on the A14 i would not like to park overnight, heard too many stories, and i can look after myself, but not against a few determined truck thievin scum/derv thieves or whoever may be lurking in the early hours…

It is Your employers responsibility to provide duty of care to its drivers, obviously i can understand you do not want to pay parking out of your wages…it is their truck…plus they are responsible for your safety / as per duty of care . I would not work for someone who would not pay for parking for THERE vehicle be it an artic or rigid. I know every one is not in that position Its not on … they wouldnt sleep in a poxy lay by… to be woke early hours to the sound of your fuel cap being smashed off. …or a pick axe through your tank… or worse case scenario your drivers door handle being forced open, then a shot of CS down your choky…

Drivers should take a bloo * y stand and demand reasonable safe funded overnight parking.
Instead of risking getting in a confrontation.
There needs to be proper truck stops provided nationwide for the safety and security of all you distance boys / girls out there every night …
Nuff Said. :imp:

It’s a crazy Idea , Luckily I don’t stretch over to the east down the 14 , and If I do it’s only as far as Burton Latimer and I can easily get there and return to base .

Start Parking in the carriageways
Put the park anywhere lights on , you will be ok .

I do hope I can drop out of the Industry this year

Luckily enough I don’t use this route anymore.

However why not send a letter off to one of the local MP’s along the A14 corridor with your concerns?

We are the most over-regulated sections of the working society with no help with our day to day issues from government. This has to be seen as a step too far going against everything that the hours and WTD laws try to put right.

Dear Mr

Thank you for your email to the Highways Agency Information Line about the above Website.

We were not aware of this site and it is useful to read the comments of those drivers of large vehicles who regularly use the trunk road and motorway network.

Yours sincerely
