Hiya,
Hello Jack, talking rules and regulations, a friends son, who was pulled for a tacho
check when genuinely looking for a ■■■■■■■■■■■■ for the night was found to be 10
minutes over the top this was on the South coast and at a place not regular to him
got a fine of £100 and got a warning that this blatant exceeding of the law will not
be tolerated in this area, as for me Jack I wouldn’t do the job in this day and age
for double time,It’s no wonder young un’s aren’t taking the job up, and contrary to
what people say there is a definite shortage of HGV drivers now so if the current
trend continues we’ll be overrun with “Johnnie foreigner” cutting rates to ribbons.
thanks harry, long retired.

We had a driver pulled in South Yorks on the A1 a few weeks back and he had the old anologue tacho , the policeman asked for his previous discs and he had left 1 in overnight by mistake ,he was given a on the spot fine of £200

Personally I would appeal in both these cases, the more drivers accept these offensive and disgusting abuses of power, the more the arrogant and uninformed r-soles dishing out these fines will continue to do so. if they lose a few in court their bosses will pass the message to calm down through the ranks, at the end of the day constant abusers of the law should be punished, but occasional infringements that can be explained and justified should be let go.

example, last week on the m62 i was passed in the outside lane by a scania artic from a well known company, shrugged my shoulders and thought 'what a knob. as i went down the hill towards milnrow he was back in the outside lane and as i was doing around 56-58mph he was doing somewhere in the region of 70!!!
using the technology at hand i called his company and spoke to a transport manager who tracked the motor as i was speaking to him. i related the events to him and his answer was “ah yes, he’s a young lad but we know what he is like behind the wheel, his dad is one of the transport managers at another depot”

these are the pilocks that should be caught and punished, constantly driving without concern for either other road users or the image of an industry which is constantly getting bad press!!!

off my soap box now and back in the cab :imp:

Hiya,
I’m glad in-cab technology wasn’t the norm when I was doing my bit other drivers
would have been complaining to my guvner all the time, back in the un-governed
days I had a Roller engined Seddon 32/4 which would bob on at 90 mph not klm
all day long. I now await the flack. But bovvered nah.

Hi Harry

trust me i am not saying i am whiter than white, when i started it was pre limiter days and as a young lad i made 'em rattle on a bit when it was safe to do so and i have noticed that some of the little circular bits of paper had a habit of blowing out of an open window if not correctly stored  never used the aberdeen overdrive though

we have all been young and some more foolish than others

my point is at this time, with all the technology now, digi cards, cameras, mobiles, trackers, etc anyone who drives like this is risking not only their own licence and that of the company, but deserves to be caught and punished, and the company (a well known one at that) didn’t seem overly bothered

it really ■■■■■■ me off when good, honest drivers get shafted for minor infractions and major ones go un-punished

the speed side is very debatable what with better brakes etc but in the outside lane, definitely not. just my opinion

Patrick

I’ve been trying but it hasn’t worked…I’ve been trying to imagine the likes of Peter Slaters lads thundering over the Pennines, brakes on fire, in todays over regulated age. :stuck_out_tongue:
I’m not saying I would encourage that sort of running but life on the road for todays drivers must be a nightmare, snowed under with rules and regs. and mobile phones.
In our day we were drivers, we were sent out to do a job correctly and safely using just our skill and intelligence…now?? they are just programmed robots.

couldn’t agree more,

i started on general haulage on flats with ropes n sheets or chains and sylvesters  trust me not only is the industry over regulated but the job, or at least most of them, is incredibly boring. the hardest thing these days to think about is what setting to put the aircon at

i would much prefer to go back to doing this job as it was when i started

My guess is if we both met together we’d be “two Grumpy old men” together, were both from the same mold, I’m 76 now and if we could work the same today as we did 30/40 years ago I’d go back tomorrow, I did get my license back a couple of years ago with the intention of going back to work even if only part time, and the only thing that really put me off was having to to the drivers cpc, I’m not frightened of doing a test, but it’s the principle of having to sit down and pay up to £500 to be told how to do a job I did for 50 years by some-one half my age, for one thing I have never heard anyone who thinks the drivers CPC is a good thing or even any good for the industry, it’s a total waste of time and money, but it’s an “EU thing” thought up by the Germans to keep drivers in line instead of really learning more about the job, like changing wheels, what’s wrong with drivers changing a wheel when he has a flat on the side of the road, absolutely nothing, except for the soft ones who are frightened of getting the hands dirty, today’s driving has nothing to do with driving, it’s all about regulations, “EU regulations”, made by unknown people sat behind a desk who couldn’t even drive a lorry let alone tell us how to drive, and regarding Patric I think he’s been brainwashed into the new age transport industry too much, my thoughts on the industry today is if they want to convert drivers into robots, born with chip’s inserted into there brains to be programed instead of being human beings, with more regulations than an aircraft pilot they can keep the job, but then only folks like you and me would really understand “Grumpy Old Man” then we could be “Two Grumpy Old Men” together.

I’m not trying to insult you Patric, but don’t let them brainwash you, we were born to use our brains not to let them brainwash us and program us to be perfect computer perfect drivers, I spent over 20 years going all over both East and Western Europe, and the regulations that are in place today are German made, then we could get on with the job and do it well get home and get paid, it’s rules and even more regulations that hinder drivers more and more every day, as I said don’t let them brainwash you, it gives you headaches and ulcers.
Kind Regards :- Jack. :grimacing:

I honestly haven’t come across anyone I know who will be voting to stay in
just hope they allow members of the “leavers” to be at the counts we all
know what a bent lot this government are they’ll fiddle it if they can.
thanks harry, long retired.

i would like to think that my vote will make a difference but as usual it will be fiddled to suit those in power and those with the money pulling the strings

Hi Jack

no insult taken  this job today is not the one it used to be, the rules and regs, as you point out have spoiled it to an extent but so have the motors, the Iveco Stralis i have been driving for the last few weeks has lots of space inside, air con, table and chair, fridge etc and would be a great motor for proper long distance work, if you can forgive the build quality, but it has no soul. i really cant see anyone preserving or restoring motors like this in the future as they are faceless, soul-less machines, nothing groundbreaking or special… just another soul-less box.

regarding the DCPC, this is the biggest joke of all time. it’s not just the money…35 hours of my life lost for no good reason, not even a test at the end to prove i was awake, let alone listening :imp: :imp:

i really enjoy this forum, reading how things were before my time on the road. like all things past we should remember how things were and what people had to do to make a living but never forget we all can still make our own minds up and to an extent still do our own thing. the motors now are a world away from 30 years ago let alone 50+, this doesn’t mean that they are better!!!

as for been brainwashed, good luck to them. 2 ex wives couldn’t manage so they don’t stand a chance

it’s good to look back in time, things were not always better but i really don’t like the look of whats to come…in general not just in the industry

Jack, I started at the bottom (van lad, Harrisons of Dewsbury), old hands in haulage gradually taught me the driving job as I went along, and it was the finest training known to man. Stuff spending £■■■ sitting in a classroom learning the job. I never needed a CPC then and I sure as hell don’t need to dance to the EU tune now. I WAS a driver before I retired and I still am.

Hiya,
Ditto GOM,
thanks harry, long retired.

Since this page is about A1 and drivers and driving, we must keep it that way, but this is an important time in our lives to decide to stay in or get out of the “Common Market” we first signed in for, and now the “European Union”, and since it affects the transport we all do or did in the past it’s in our interest to do what we have to do for ourselves and the good of the transport industry and the good of the country, the older end like myself know what we need to do, so here’s my story of what I did on Wednesday this week, I spent about 12 hours following a charity cycle ride to pick up or repair bikes or ones who had had enough so I was there to pick fallen with there bikes and put them in the van, we covered about 30 miles collecting for a charity, we had about 120 on bikes and thousands of spectators on the way who do this twice every year dressed in funny clothing and yes it was fun and we collected quite a lot of money, but what interested me was that most of the people we spoke to got on about the “referendum” and every one of them were voting out, which made me feel good that I was among good company, and getting up at 5 am was worth it. Amen, now that’s me off my soap box for today. :- Jack Graham. :unamused:
