A1 transport,leeds

keith 2:
Was on the phone to denis glover last week, was talking about the first f10 that came to a one,i said It was john carter with jcp160s for the low loader work, but den thinks it was al render got the first one ,but I think s reg was the first one and the next ones went on tir work on t reg trucks.jcp159 was a erf an jcp160s was brain Wilkinson first new van,can any one remember, that, van got washed every Saturday morning by me :unamused: pub on the way home at dinner time, brians saying will just have one six pint later, got me in the dog house, but good days  keith

I remember that Merc of Brian’s, it was the one I took to Italy and re-loaded back from Prato, Daisy gave me some drums to take my own diesel, but he didn’t tell me one was half full of water, but I soon found out when I filed the tank up half way down to Paris, it took me about a full hour to drain it all out from the underside of the tank half way down a slip-road from the services, these are the days we’ll never get back full of fun and a good set of lads to work with. :- Jack.

Any one remember the two maintenance men Clive and Dave Hooley,Dave started up working for himself, and in an article in the Sun newspaper he won a brand new Ford Transit,I think the judges were very impressed by the fact he had to barrow hundreds and hundreds of tons of concrete down at five rise locks, but no idea what happened to Clive who was a first class plumber.

Haven’t see Dave for a long time, last time was at a reunion but still the same old dave good company and good to work with. :-Jack

aye A1 transport were a company many o us younger ones wanted onto up Lockerbie/eaglesfield way cant remember any o the guys leaving once in , I asked on a few occasions but could not get in… :stuck_out_tongue: ach so is life.

Hi “JIMBO47”, nice to see you looking on the site, I remember some of the drivers from Lockerby, they did a change-over for the night trunk, I must admit I didn’t know any of you personally because I was on the continent and only went up your way when the job needed us to go, but great to know we can still get in contact after all these years, may-be if I get another reunion going we can meet up and spill some diesel and talk old times. :-Jack Graham.

Hi Guys

Just found this site and been looking through certainly brings back lots of memories from my days at Henry Long and then A One nice to see a lot of names I recall being mentioned on here

Time marches on but still seems like yesterday when we doing the Wednesday flyers down to Italy & back

Found this picture on google which is what led me to this site I inherited E973JDX from Bernard Carter after he sadly passed away in Calais following a heart attack, not sure where the picture was taken but I’m sure Jack & Alan will recall

Keep the memories coming

Cheers

Well well well, Steve Connell, how are you old pal!, it’s been a long time but nice to know you found us again on this site, the only problem is not many use it any more, if I can get enough interested I might get another reunion set up so at least if no-one else comes at least you and me can spill some diesel and talk about old times and rubbish, that picture if I remember right was somewhere down Naples area I remember being there for some reason there was about 3/4 of us loading for home in that picture, regarding Bernard Carter I cant remember who took over his lorry but it must have been you, it was a sad day when he died, I remember going down to Dover to bring it back home, it wasn’t the best job I had but some-one had to bring it back, but when I got to it in the parking area it had been broken into, I told the police but there wasn’t much they could do, Dennis Glover was with him when he died and had to go back over to Calais to bring it over, a sad few days indeed.
We do try to keep the memories coming so keep looking and hopefully we can meet up again in the near future. Kind Regards :-Jack.

Hi Jack

Good that somebody is still looking in

I was in Dover with a few of the other lads when Dennis came in that evening when Bernard passed it was a big shock not very nice for Dennis either

Yes would be up for reunion if you can get one sorted

Will have a look through my pictures and see if there’s any I can post on here

Steve

There`s a Henry Long thread on here too Steve if you can find it

Hi Steve, I did a reunion for a few years with the help of Stuart Broughton and a couple more, but haven’t done one for the past 2 years because interest went and I was sick a couple of times, but I still have quite a few contact numbers and a few email addresses, so it would be possible to do another one providing we can get a venue set up, we usually have it around September / October time when all the holidays have been done, so if you have any ideas just let us know on this page, like a venue may-be around Bradford area and I’ll get the ball rolling again, most of it by mouth by passing the word to who you know.

Regarding Bernard Carter yes it was a shock, but that’s life and we have to carry on, I know Dennis took it a bit hard because he was with him, but it’s all in the past now it’s still nice to contact drivers we haven’t seen for years, so keep looking and if you come up with any ideas I’ll make a start and see what we can do. Take care, Regards :-Jack Graham.

Hi Steve. ref the photo of the two sciania’s,the one on the right is the one i had and i can’t recal the reg now. I believe the picture was taken in San Paulo near Milan where we tipped the petfood.
The reason for for my thinking is the a one vehicles in the background,we always had three/four of our trucks together.

That said Steve how are you and your family all well i hope.

Alan,
I found a better picture if the 2 Scania’s taken at a different and closer angle, can just make out the reg to be E167 OBJ.I think…

Chris B

Hi Chris B. The registration of the scania i had was E167GBJ and that’s the scania on the right of the photo. I think the photo was taken where we used tip petfood in Milan,as there was alway’s three or four a one vehicle’s in there at the same time. It was a regular job for a one,we also tipped petfood in Rome.

Regards
Alan.

One of our contracts this was the first FL7 that A one bought. was driven by the ex low loader driver John Carter (my Helluva length)

This was a contract at Sheburn either Wellstar or Constar. Some Dafs we inherited

Some of you continental lads setting off from Dover

Office staff in late 80’s. Might ring some bells.

This was a company we inherited from Felixstow. Team Haul. The Scanias I think there were 6 got repainted in Aone colours and went on the continent.

When they came they was green as in the phote, keith

The ones that went abroad were 110’s and the one in Newport was a 140, I know the driver was getting a bollocking for going too fast with it because of the MPG was too low, that’s why it didn’t go over the water.

I took Alan’s a couple of times to Italy, and I liked them they were good to drive and the beds were better than the Volvo, but I didn’t know where they went when A1 finished with them, I remember going to Batipaglia south of Naples with Alan’s and enjoyed every mile with it. :- Jack.
