TS Tank Engines. Made by Gardner’s one of 4 makers of tank engines in WW1. The battle tank was a British invention and innovation in 1916. Gardner’s forged and machined the crankshafts for the other 3 tank engine manufacturers. The same design of engine, by Harry Ricardo, was used in all British tanks of WW1. Gardner’s built 250 tank engines out of a total of 1,004.

Hello Graham - Gingerfold  I first saw this Tillings-Stevens Chivers lorry photograph in the 1980s,and,although I knew it had been converted
from a petrol-engined lorry into a Gardner oil-engined lorry,I have always assumed that it had been a purpose-built lorry from being brand
new…whenever that was…

Now being wiser and more knowledgeable (forget about being older! :exclamation:  ),your comment set me thinking…So I put two and two together -
as they say  - and I came up with Gold :exclamation:  EUREKA! :exclamation:  What I learned was a new one on me - you learn something every day…that’s
another saying…

So,with respect,the caption for this Tilling-Stevens Chivers lorry,should be something like this  :-

Tilling-Stevens TS6,Gardner 5L2,Dropside,6x2 or 6x4 Lorry,Chassis No. 3649,DB 5078,Stockport,April 1925.North Western 4x2 Brush O51R Double Decker Bus,No.178,withdrawn 1930.178 & 182,DB 5082,converted into lorries in 1935-36 and operated by Chivers: -

.Tilling-Stevens TS6,Gardner 5L2,Dropside,6x2 or 6x4 Lorry,Chassis No. 3649,DB 5078,Stockport,April 1925.North Western 4x2 Brush O51R Double Decker Bus,No.178,withdrawn 1930.178 & 182,DB 5082,converted into lorries in 1935-36..jpg

So it was originally a North Western open topper double decker bus, built in the days when open-topped double decker buses were normal without
fully enclosed top decks and roofs, unlike today when open-topped double decker buses are novelty vehicles-seaside tourist attractions-mobile platform football team victory cup displays, etc, etc  Totally enclosed double decker buses with roofs became standard from the mid-1920s onwards or so - Sheffield’s first covered-top double decker bus entered service in July 1924,for example…but curiously Sheffield’s first
covered-top double decker tram entered service in 1903! Bradford’s first covered-top double decker trolleybus entered service in November 1920.

Fortunately - doubly fortunately for that matter - a North Western fleet member from the previous batch of Tilling-Stevens TS6 double decker
buses,is now preserved. So I can now show you what the above Chivers’ lorries,DB 5078,No.178,and DB 5082,No.182,originally looked like as
double decker buses before they were converted into lorries - in colour  QV photograph below.

Another surviving fleet member survives in chassis form:Tilling-Stevens TS6,Chassis No.3635,DB 5062.Stockport,1925.North Western No.162.

Tilling-Stevens,1911-1952,made petrol-electric buses, lorries and motorcoaches from 1911 to 1928 at least, vehicles were made with conventional
gearboxes from at least 1926.

Tilling-Stevens petrol-electric lorries, ex-buses and ex-motorcoaches were great favourites with travelling showmen, because of their inbuilt electricity generators! Both in World War One and World War Two Tilling-Stevens petrol-electric searchlight lorries were built and used by
the British WD-WO-Military.Some were also built in 1935-1938 - both these and the WWII lorries had conventional transmissions and generators.

They were big Atkinson and Seddon Atkinson lorry operators, they switched to Leyland Roadtrains and now operate DAF lorries. Thorpes operated
some AEC diesel-oil -engined Atkinson rigid eight-wheeler lorries at one time

On the back panels of the cabs of their Gardner-engined tractive units was the following slogan written in white letters:-
GARDNER - The World’s Best

Here is one of Thorpes preserved lorries,QV photograph below.

The third triangle:-

Anhängerdreieck I can hear you saying 'What? ! :exclamation: …Actually,it’s German for…please read on

Anhängerdreieck - Trailer Triangle. From Friday,1st April,1938 to Tuesday,20th March,1956,motor vehicles in Germany had to display an illuminated triangle in a upright position when pulling a trailer, folded down when not.
France,Netherlands,Italy,Sweden and Russia also had this trailer -triangle regulation at around about the same time period.

So Heavy Haulage Ballast Diesel Road Locomotives and other motor vehicles had to display this trailer-triangle upright when towing a trailer,or
whatever.
Heavy Haulage Ballast Diesel Road Locomotive -

Russian: Heavy Haulage Ballast Dieasel Road Locomotive = тяжелый буксировка буксировка дизел Дорогa тепловоз

Italian: Heavy Haulage Ballast Diesel Road Locomotive = Il Trasporto Pesante Zavorra Diesel Locomotiva Stradale

Dutch: Heavy Haulage Ballast Diesel Road Locomotive = Heavy Haulage Ballast Weg Diesel Locomotieven

French :Heavy Haulage Ballast Diesel Road Locomotive = Transport Lourd Diesel Locomotive Routière Ballast

Swedish :Heavy Haulage Ballast Diesel Road Locomotive = Tunga Transporter Ballast Diesel Väg Lokomotive

German: Heavy Haulage Ballast Diesel Road Locomotive = Schwertransporte Ballast Diesel Straße Lokomotive

I thought it’s an interesting idea to get free translations on the Internet of the languages of the above nations in regard to that wonderful
terminology  There were also other translations which were variations of the above translations,so I’ve tried to choose the best translations

Some languages don’t state words and names in the same order that English-speaking peoples do.

Re the pritchards beaver at the docks could possibly be Mostyn in north Wales or round about there. I used to do the north Wales run in the very late 70s into the 80s and one thing I did notice were plenty of timber wagons from that area running along the coastal route through Greenfield ,Flint Connahs quay England bound this was when the M56 ended at Helsby and given the town of origin of the beaver I reckon it’s a good possibility .Ta ra Ginge.

Demountable chemical tanks carried on a flat, not that uncommon back in the day. The Octopus belonged to E.P. Potter & Co. Ltd. of Little Lever, Bolton, a division of A.C.C. Chrome & Chemicals, and it was a lorry I was very familiar with as a teenager. Potter’s was managed by the family for its entire existence of 101 years, closing in 1969 and they were world leaders in the manufacture of chromium based chemicals, but also produced Sulphuric and Hydrochloric acids. There is a lot of attention to detail in the way the tanks were carried and secured if the photo is studied closely. And, can anyone identify the location? The photo was taken on 21st December 1966.
