In the 1890s the Diesel - Oil Engine was invented by the German Engineer,Rudolf Diesel, but many years passed before this type of engine became
universally known as the ‘Diesel Engine’.Throughout the first half of the 20th Century many engineers, engine designers, manufacturers of diesel-oil
engines for automotive, marine, rail, industrial and aviation applications, motor vehicles, etc, referred to the diesel engine as the ‘Oil Engine’.And in
some cases as the ‘Diesel-Oil Engine’.
As late as the 1970s the Rolls-Royce diesel-oil engine manufacturing division of Rolls-Royce was known as the Rolls-Royce Oil Engine Division, and by
that time, besides making C-Range Diesel-Oil Engines, they were making Eagle Diesel Engines for fitment in to Foden,ERF,Atkinson,Seddon,
Scammell,etc,lorries.

These days there is another indicator of a diesel-engined road vehicle = DERV

I believe the “Imperial” bit on the tank was originally the ICI brand from their Teeside refinery and they started producing Petrol as a by product of their other chemical process. There was a garage in Kendal in the 60’s/ early 70’s that sold ICI Imperial juice and it was always cheaper than other brands but it had a quite distinctive smell, more chemically than Petrol. Philips must have took the brand over as their terminal and refinery was on Teesside and I can vouch for the fact that you needed about 10% more Philips derv to do a similar mileage to Shell, BP, Texaco and Gulf. Cheers Bewick.

That’s interesting about the lower MPG with fuels that were recovered from other chemical processes. Phillips is still in business and the parent company, Phillips 66 is a large US brand. It was quite common back in the day for by-products from town gas production from coal to be mixed into petrol especially, benzole being one such addition. I think that VIP as a brand could have started out as by products from gas works.

Pilkington Glass St. Helens, AEC Regal Mk.III coach chassis for low height bodywork. When I was riding in Holden’s lorries as a kid in the 1950s Pilkington’s Regals were a virtually guaranteed sight on Liverpool Docks. The drivers and mates had uniforms like those of bus drivers, with peaked caps. I think that Pilkington’s had five Regals over the years, 9.6 litre engines with 5-speed constant mesh gearboxes.
