If I get flooded, then as I live on a hill, with a river and a canal at the bottom about half a mile away, then we are in trouble.

… the country has been told there will be as much money as is needed.
An opportunist politicians promise? There will never be enough money to fully protect every home, business, infrastructure and suggesting otherwise is dishonest. Believing it is naive and gullible.

If you build on the floodplain of a river, you will get this from time to time. It’s the risk you take. High in the Pennines we get wind, snow and all manner of other weather phenomena. Last year we had snow over six feet high blocking roads all over the shop. They didn’t give a toss down south as it didn’t affect them.
But if you live high up, you have to expect it. I have sympathy for the folk, but unfortunately if you build a house in the arctic it’s cold. In the desert it’s hot. High in the mountains it’s windy and it snows a fair bit. On a floodplain, it floods.
It ain’t rocket science!!
This. I wholeheartedly concur

Well listen to the Chuckle Brothers , I can accept such an ignorant comment from the Northern monkey but expected a broader view from yourself Luke .
The majority of villages affected by flooding have been there for hundreds of years , without such disastrous consequences as they are now experiencing . The building on the flood plains plus the lack of dredging is a relatively recent activity which has had local residents alarmed and vocal for for a while now , 20 years to my knowledge but bow to better judgement , the dimwits in officialdom have chosen to turn a blind eye and now it’s biting them in the backside . Those responsible for this fiasco will without doubt be bricking it with good cause at the moment , meanwhile backing millions of pounds of taxpayers money to foreign relief/bribery whilst letting their own law abiding nationals bend over and get shafted yet again.
WTF are residents meant to do if the powers to be won’t listen ? Pitchfork rebellion ? It might not be rocket science but it surely isn’t the fault of those that see their properties and dreams ruined .It’s a [zb] disgrace ,more so that fellow patriots feel it right to mock them .
You’ll find that these areas were intentionally flooded by farmer ‘back in the day’ to keep frost off the grounds over winter. ALL farming done in floodplains used to be flooded in “flood season” to ensure that as spring came on the ground was soft enough to plough by horse and hand. No big ■■■ machines to do it for them back then. Then the population grew and we started to build on these farm lands, throw in global warming and you have what we are looking at just now. I feel for the people effected but it’s true to form, if you build on a floodplain it will eventually flood. I also feel as we see this problem getting bigger every winter that there needs to be something substantial put in place to prevent these poor people losing everything they own as insurance Co. will not pay out for anything damaged through an “act of God”. Which in my eyes is bullS*it! As for the driver, we don’t know that he hadn’t checked the depth of the road (however I very much doubt he did) but let say as given he had, he would have seen that old girl and could have picked a more choice time to make his way through.

LMFAO you will be soon if nothing is done about this situation and I for one will have the kettle on waiting on your arrival, just west of Edinburgh. Oh and bring your own tea bags, I don’t drink that girly stuff
The roads are a disgrace with the pot holes, what chance have the rivers got?
Predictable that the Westminster meerkats have stuck their plastic, pink faces out of their burrows now that it`s got all too real on their own doorsteps. Expect the lip service and promises to come issuing out like projectile vomit. Bet George is burning the midnight oil trying to come to terms with the eventual terrifying clean up costs.
Oh, and respect to you, Cleggy - not afraid to get your toes damp for the cameras, eh old son?

Although having said that flooding in Southern England is nothing new and the fact is the Thames ( and the lower Mole ) have always been the type of rivers that can take a lot of bad weather before they eventually let go in a big way on a delayed basis. The flood relief schemes at Molesey and the Thames barrier have made a massive difference to that tolerance and had this been before the barrier and Mole flood defences things probably would have been a lot worse at least in North Surrey just as they were in 1968.

Climate change, folks. Expect more of this stuff as extreme weather events become the norm over the next century or so.You read the Daily Fail don’t you ?
I wouldn’t wipe my arse on the Daily Wail. But I did do a postgrad degree in Environmental Science in a previous life, and I can still remember some bits of it (although not much!). Quite a lot of it involved learning about palaeoclimatology. It’s not the first time the Somerset Levels have been inundated, and it won’t be the last.
Most of the raving ‘climate change’ believers would like to think that they’re cleverer than everyone else.In this case it doesn’t take a climate scientist to realise that the the recent series of low pressure areas that have caused the floods are caused by what’s happening in America. In which case it’s all about colder weather than normal, much further south than normal, with resulting effects on the jet stream.Unfortunately for the believers that doesn’t fit the bs global warming script.
The fact is the difference between Britain being under feet of snow or feet of water during the winter months has always depended on which direction the wind blows. If it’s from the west/south west it’ll be wet and if it’s from the east it’ll be cold. That’s because the Atlantic will always be there and there’ll never be summer type temperatures in Siberia regardless of all the bs that the raving global warming believers are trying to tell everyone.
I.Q test for drivers? Have you not heard of the DCPC? Oh sorry, silly me. What am I saying:-(

Effects on the jet stream are all part of the, er, “global warming script”. However, I’m not going to argue climate change science - or indeed, anything else - with you, since we all know you’ve already made what passes for your mind up. I merely observe that it’s peculiar that people of little intelligence or knowledge, who cheerfully and unquestioningly believe everything they read in the Daily Mail or the Guardian, feel qualified to dismiss mountains of properly researched peer reviewed scientific literature without actually knowing anythong at all about the subject in question.
One thing I would say is that unfortunately, due to the optimistic regard with which climate science is now held, any right thinking scientist who may seek to question the status uo isn’t going to do so for fear of being ostracised.
Is there a PROVEN link between co2 emissions and climate change?? Not a theory, evidence?
The earths climate has always been variable, I would like to know how the previous ice age came about with a lack of co2 producing man made processes…
CO2 levels within the atmosphere have always varied, and species have always had to adapt to changing climates or die out. Climate change is nothing new, the difference now is that the rate of change is too fast to adapt to. The planet will carry on much as it always has, but species (including us) will come and go.
Scientists - at least, reputable ones - don’t worry about questioning “the status quo”, by the way. That’s how science works … any hypothesis is rigorously tested until the weight of evidence justifies proposing a theory (see also: evolutionary theory). Any theory is only as strong as the supporting evidence, and when new evidence comeas along which seems to justify modifying the theory, that’s what happens. The weight of evidence behind climate change theory is overwhelming.

Yet more typical raving green/socialist bs.
Firstly the effects on the jet stream in this case being all about cold polar air extending further South than normal into areas of latitude where it should be much warmer.Which doesn’t seem to fit the script of so called warming poles.
In the case of the bs so called overwhelming ‘evidence’ of C02 induced global warming neither you nor any other so called ‘expert’ could provide any direct mathematical link between global temperatures and C02 levels on a percentage basis IE what’s the projected exact percentile ratio of global day to day temperature increase relative to CO2 increase .Bearing in mind that if the theory can’t be shown mathematically then it doesn’t exist.I won’t hold my breath waiting for an answer.
Which isn’t surprising considering that, unlike Venus, where the whole bs scenario originated,C02 forms a minute proportion of Earth’s atmosphere.Let alone the difference between the two planets in regards to their distance from the Sun.
Global warming your all so out of date. When all of there predictions that we would have a cliamate like the sahara by now didnt come true they changed the name to cliamate change.
Don’t argue it with me, CF … write a proper scientific paper and get it peer reviewed and send it off to a reputable journal with your, er, “findings”. Be sure and include phrases like “raving green” and “bs scenario” so they know to take you seriously.

That’s not actually true. The science behind it always predicted that our weather would get stormier. Any idea that we’d all be sunning ourselves in a Mediterranean style climate was purely an ill - informed tabloid construct, nothing more.
Ive been reving the nuts out of my car while spraying aerosols for the last 10 minutes trying to help ffs.

It all started in the 70’s with that ■■■■■■ Sagan trying to make the case that Earth is the same as Venus when he scared himself silly with the Mariner and Pioneer probes.According to him and his raving followers America should be in a heatwave all year round by now.

I’m still waiting for those figures which considering that you’re an obvious believer I’d have thought that you’d be able to provide. That’s ‘if’ the bs theory was true of course. However being that it’s actually bs it’s no surprise that you could only provide yet more of the same politically driven garbage as all the other believers instead.
