Here you go:
dft.gov.uk/pgr/roads/tss/tsm … 8part2.pdf
The bit you probably don’t want to read starts around p61. The rules changed a couple of years ago (not quite sure when) to bring in all the stuff about the rear chevrons, etc.
Update: Actually, I can’t convince myself that the chapter 8 stuff applies outside roadworks, though I don’t really know. Were you in roadworks at the time the HATO told you the vehicle wasn’t compliant?
I got the orange hi viz and yellow stripe but just not chevrons

Well if all the back is orange retro, then you’re probably OK, and you can enjoy stuffing your rolled-up copy of chapter 8 up his backside next time you see him.
Thank god it’s not me, not with my chalfonts!!

HATO’s don’t have vans. If it was a van, then it would have been one of the HA contractors.
Hiya… a few years ago when we did our own wheel changing a chap from stoke was doing a wheel change nr jct15
on his lorry off side.(it was early morning) a truck passed him very close and hooked up his overhalls by a rope hook.
they found john nr juction 10 of the m6 still alive but smashed up badly he returned to driving when he got well.

You know what a lot say , they can’t be ar**d to move over a bit Too much like hard work
If they pass too close you nearly get sucked off
I always tip them, hard graft great respect for them at least the ones that look after me
In theory we should adopt a move over rule like they have in some staes in the US but in reality there is too much traffic for it to work
Its just goes to prove, the hardshoulder is a dangerous place to be stopped. People die on it. It is not a place of refuge, if you break down, get out, get up the banking.
HATS OF TO THEM RAIN OR SHINE THEY GET IT DONE.

If possible I try and get in the 2nd lane when I see break downs/wheel changing on the hard shoulder.
