£50 notes .....

I never had a problem with scottish notes had plenty spent np as it is legal tender

I have taken £50 as payment but was a pain as it had to be double checked the all the numbers for it written down etc as we didnt have a uv scanner at the time but it was back in 1986 ish

No, no. They aren’t legal tender, they are legal currency.

Legal position of Scottish and Northern Irish banknotes is outlined on The Association of Commercial Banknote Issuers website.

Even before the €notes, we often struggled to spend 100dm notes, and when the €500 notes did come out there were very few places you could spend them. I don’t think I have had more than about a dozen £50’s since I started work in the 70’s

It must be a northern thing, I’ve been paid in (& spent) loads of fifties, going back as far as the old brown ones.

Free burgers and diesel! this is like that old film The million pound note.Gonna get me some 50’s

I wonder if there’s an element of truth to this you know. You have shown that you wanted to purchase something, have offered a. £50 note, perfectly legally, which the shopkeeper has declined to accept. Surely on that basis you are free to leave the shop with your goods FOC?

No, they’re not your goods yet.
