50 mph on Motorways, is it safe?

.

Rob K:
Unfortunately, “doing your own thing” on a motorway - in this instance - hampering everyone elses prgress because of your own selfishness and basically becoming a rolling road block does affect other people, and it’s not just one or two others, it’s the entirety of other road users.

With respect.

How does driving at 50 mph on a motorway with three or sometimes four lanes make you become a rolling roadblock? Is it something to do with an impatient ■■■■ wanting to overtake on a gradient and taking the next half hour to do it in the middle lane? Have you seen that at all? Are you a culprit?

Can someone pass me some more bricks so I can build a new wall to bang me head against please, coz I’ve knocked this one down :unamused: .

Rob K:
There’s a big difference to people “doing their own thing” which doesn’t affect anyone else, or maybe only affects one or two people but they’re not really that bothered about it. Unfortunately, “doing your own thing” on a motorway - in this instance - hampering everyone elses prgress because of your own selfishness and basically becoming a rolling road block does affect other people, and it’s not just one or two others, it’s the entirety of other road users. That’s when one should stop and think, hang on a minute, it’s me that’s causing all this congestion, I’ll get my toe down and keep with the flow of traffic so we all get where we want to be today and not the silly hours of tomorrow morning sometime.

With respect.

Of course everything we do affects somebody else Rob, its got to aint it? So, if you and others that think your way were to get your way, thats unfair on, and affects others in a way they dont like, which is precisely the type of selfishness that you are complaining about aint it?

I’ll ask again, to you or anyone that wants others to be forced to do their bidding, why is it I can do the job without calling for that, on the same roads and not in any type of easy or special job? I aint being sarky here, Im really interested to know, because I know I aint the greatest driver on the road, so cant see the difference.

Respect reciprocated.

All speed is inappropiate when it kills someone! :open_mouth:

SPEED Kills Fact!

In that case, we should all be doing 0 mph

Thecritic:
I can’t be bothered picking one liners out of your post to reply

But I shall post a quote of yours on a previous thread

You and your cohorts might think its big and clever to drive like ■■■■■■■■■■ but I and the probably the majority of posters on this site don’t.

You must have been bothered because you seem to of read all of my post to pull that one out. The fact that the quote does not relate to this topic but to an incident involving my car driving wife and an unregulated Irish truck capable of doing 75 mph is underhand, so to put the record straight on that subject, here is the address of the post that the quote was taken from.

Funny a large majority of posters on this site agree with me!

I’ve counted seven, who agree or side with you, that’s hardly a majority.
So lets put it to a poll.

of course its safe :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: I am the one controling my artic no one else so if I decide to do 50 or 56 live with it dont sit grinding your teeth wishing me to speed up , I aint breaking any laws doing 50 so whats the prob
seems some people on here like to be seen as big bad truckers having to bomb about all day :unamused: been there done that didnt like it so now suit myself

just put my opinion on the voting site

I think this may end with a handbags at dawn duel

Every freedom comes with a responsibility to employ your freedom in a way that is at least moderately considerate to others.

I agree, Indeed it does, but to attempt to diminish or suppress someones freedom simply because it does not sit in accord with ones own wishes is the haven of the tyrant and dictator! IMHO!

bloody hell have you two swallowed a poetry book or somthing lovely wording like has brought a lump to my throat & a tear to my eye sniff sniff

sorry about the two linked posts being separate but dunno how to put two quotes in one boxy thingy

Cranes traveling at 50 mph sport amber flashers for a very good reason, a lesson the deedle brigade could do with taking into account. You may enjoy being an individual but you never know there might be a reason why your pootling enrages the majority of other road users. IMHO. :imp:
I agree with Allikat and yes Critic that’s an artic I’m driving!

so let me see

me doing 50 you doing 56 ,you can get passed easily

me doing 56 you doing 56,result 2 lanes blocked for umpteen miles causing congestion because theres only 1 free running lane for vehicles doing 70

can’t see your argument rob sorry

Well put johnboy , simple really isnt it :unamused:

The thing that’s made a difference to how things used to be is the limiter.Anyone who wanted to pass someone else could choose whatever speed their truck was capable of and use that speed to get past (even if it was over the limit!).Then the limiter came in and the point was made at the time about the difficulties it might cause for overtaking etc.Now I used to drive up to whatever the limiter allowed but what I found was there was ALWAYS someone that little bit faster who would come right up on your back door (not leaving a safe gap,'cos he knows he’s going to take 10 miles to get past you so he doesn’t want to sit in the middle lane like a prat for any longer than he thinks he needs to),then he pulls out and gradually over the next 10 miles or so he pulls up alongside, gets past and 3,6, or 9 feet later CUTS IN (not leaving a safe gap).I then have to spend the next 10 or 20 miles, whatever, looking at HIS back doors, wondering if he’s checked the brake lights on the trailer before setting off or back off to say,50 MPH?,to let him get away and maintain a safe distance between me and him in front. Now I have two options,

  1. Pick up speed again until the next prat comes along(and it won’t be long!) or

2.Just relax, set the cruise control to 50 at let the PRATS get on with it

I favour option 2,it lets me stay as calm as possible and improves my chances of living for another day 'cos there’s still so many things I want to do!And as for some of the opinions of the youngsters on here DON’T TEACH YER GRANNY TO ■■■■ EGGS! :sunglasses:

Very well put tartanraider! :sunglasses:

the problem with the original situation was the fault of the left hand drive daf…probably wanted to follow the other truck into the middle lane and didnt give himself time to evaluate the situation…and so the car driver was in his blind spot…time is of the essence…remember…take your time and get there in one piece…
with regard to cruise control, at times they are very useful…in fact they are better than the piece of wood which we carefully cut to length and used years ago…better that the 2 scaffold boards we also used as a makeshift bed in order to pocket the night out money…but there i go drifting again…anyway i worked for a firm a few years ago…on nights…delivering the sun a couple of the drivers couldnt manage night work and cruise control at the same time…did a lot of damage to the trucks and the central barrier…so the fitters decided to weld up the cruise controls…end of story…behind every wheel is a potential nut…
have a nice day

LOL! well people dictating to others is something I hate above all things, and its amazing what it can inspire. At the end of the day all it comes down to is people wanting their own way at the expense of others, and that I hate.
Live and let live.

Taking it easy must be better then this

cant see what the arguement is tbh, there’s no minimum speed limit so its down to the driver to judge the flow of traffic,we dont all drive super duper power machines, is this a macho thing? i claas me self as a safe driver and am quite content to sit behind someone who going slow till its safe to pass.
