I personally think thats a sound idea El Gordo, but you are preaching to the converted a little, go tell the highways people, etc if they’ll listen.
I must say I find the 40 mph speed limit a real pain in the the Rs. There are some real main roads around here A66, A69 that go on for ages and at 40mph it just has me pulling my hair out. My impression though is it does not matter as its the North, I bet if it were Surrey they would have been duelled years ago.
SWA…sorry forgot to say,
A very warm welcome to Trucknet.
the dvla claim that an amazing 214,500 drivers are banned from driving each year
how long before you join that figure?
stick to the speed limit and play it safe, take great joy at all those sad car drivers stuck behind you for mile after mile on that single carriageway road and relish the fact that they will bring about a reform of the speed limits for hgv’s using single carriageways.
whether or not you think it is safe to travel faster than the speed limit a speed camera (whether static or mobile) will show no mercy and as your points clock up so does your inability to change jobs, the more points you have the less desirable you are to prospective employers and remember this too, when the letter comes from the camera partnership your employer may not even tell you what is coming your way but they will fill it in with your details and send it off without even questioning the facts.
some employers are even happy to send your details to debt collectors for parking tickets aquired at msa’s.
don’t you just love a good boss?
thats it fellow drivers get your foot down, save the boss some money and when you lose your licence don’t worry because the boss will remember how much money you saved them and you’ll be well looked after.
like heck you will.
Its about time someone done a sticker for the back of trucks:
This truck HAS to do 40 MPH on a single carriageway!!!
Dont like it?
E-Mail your M.P.
We dont want to hold you up but the law says we must.
The slower traffic in general goes the more vehicles a road can accomodate- they drive closer together (eg M25 adjustable speed limits). A 40mph speed limit though archaic and set when lorries could not even do this speed, does indeed slow the traffic and thereby reduce congestion. When the speed limits were set coaches were much faster than lorries and did some incredible speeds hence they got a higher speed limit which really slowed them down.
If you raise the 40mph limit you get congestion not at 40mph because of an evil trucker who the government has no control over BUT horror of horrors because maybe the governments sustainable transport plan is a failure and the roads will not hold the increased traffic speed.
Maybe the printers who print the names etc for trucknet maybe able to print something suitable…albeit for a couple of quid each…rikki should jump on the band wagon and get it organised…i`ll buy 2…
Spotted today on the back of an Asda trailer on the M1 a sticker that read as follows.
I keep within the speed limits
for this vehicle…
40 Single carriageways
50 Dual carriageways
60 Motorways
…For Safety’s Sake.
It also had the logo of the Casualty Reduction Partnership on it. Seems like an attempt at educating car drivers as to the limits of trucks.
perhaps we should adopt the french system of 60.80.90. stickers with an additional notice saying british truckers actualy stick to these limits.
lol we still have 60mph speed limit on motorways, but limiters which STOP you reaching 60mph, leaving a driver with no controll over his/her speed for hours on end can and has lead to m/way accidents
Coffeeholic:
No review, why is everybody in such a hurry to kill themselves anyway? As you say the limits were set many years ago and people argue, rightly so, that braking systems etc have improved since then. However the flip side of that is vehicles were smaller and lighter and there was far less traffic about.
Also why does any driver who is paid by the hour want speed limits raised so they will end up doing more work for the same pay? The ones who ignore the limits now are already doing that as well as putting their licence at risk.

Chill out, slow down and enjoy the drive, you still get where you are going. You just get there a few minutes later.
I’m with you there coffeeholic!!!

Id buy 1 to m8,ive only been driving for a living for 2 months and im already fed up with car drivers blasting past and giving various hand signals after being stuck behind me for a couple of miles.
they need to be educated for eveyones sake

I don’t think a wholesale review is required - BUT certain roads can easily handle faster wagons.A15 Scunthorpe to Lincoln. Vast stretches of Norwich to Newark via Kings Lynn., for example. A wagon doing 40 on those is often a bigger hazard than anything else as it’s provoking silly overtakes, and often pulling in isn’t an option cos of getting the thing back out, especially if fully laden.
What I’d advocate is safety reviews on some local major arterial routes that are single carriageway undertaken between the police, local authorities, RoSPA and the RHA. If it’s over a certain width, trial a raised limit for 6 months. If there’s no rise in fatalities, then make it permanent on that individual route.
All it would take is a new roadsign and the necessary adjustments to the highway code. Newspapers would do the rest imo.
The sign could simply be the existing national speed limit sign, with a red line going in the opposite diagonal, or changing the white background to yellow. Nice and easy to spot, bold design and can’t be claimed to be something else.
Make sure the new regs are worded that the limit means 50mph for LGV’s, “when safe to do so”.
Then if the auths want to reduce speeds near junctions that already have dubious records, stick one of the old signs up with a side-road warning sign, new sign on the other side and bobs yer uncle.
can’t see that not working, imo.
It’s the ones doing 38mph on the A1, A15, A17A66 etc then on the rare and short dual carriageways, accelerate to 56mph. You are perfectly within your rights to do 38 on the single track, but the speed limit on a dual carriageway is 50 so don’t take the ■■■■ I’m becoming one of the slower ones now, due to an overabundance of points And before anyone starts that’s 15 years points and accident free, and 12 Months accident free

oh dear, thats it then.
now it’s been made official that the government can make thousands of lives a misery and take some cash in the process we can expect a huge crackdown on those crazy truck drivers thundering through the quiet green lanes of the countryside in those dangerous juggernauts with dodgy brakes.
just remember that you heard it first on this website.
