Those that do usually retire and are dead within 3 years after a mixtute of withdrawal symptoms and burn out.and I aint talking out of my arse here,.I have seen it time and time again.
I discovered a long time ago after being guilty of it myself for a LONG time,.that there is sure as hell a whole lot more to life than spending most of it in an effin truck.
@ets Have you considered getting yourself some additional string to your bow? ADR or hiab or similar? You’re far less likely to be run-ragged doing those kind of jobs than you are with GH
Is there extra pay after 48 hours like time and a bit
70 hours a week gets you over a grand a week at 15 quid a hour
12.44 an hour gets you 870 for 70 hours
38 hours a week for normal people gets you 470 quid a week
Isn’t that what the job is, more hours more money
problem here is they want the money but not the work

Money is worthless if you don’t have the time and energy to enjoy it. I don’t care if I get paid 2 grand a week there’s no way I’d do it long term only to eventually start spending that hard earned money on private healthcare and therapy

As you say, there’s a lot more to life than simply money, though there’s many that will never see that POV. So we have a race to the bottom: long hours for low pay, all because “the other lads are happy to do it”
Millions of dads are not around for kids growing up, unless you are 9 to 5 and earning decent money
It only happens the regrets as you get older, it goes with age and and memories, nothing dramatic just nature you need more starting out you need less at the end.
So the saying i missed a lot because i was working is the most natural thing in the world for a dad to say, it’s called providing for your family
They were out on the road because they chose to be.While others like me single no ties were bored out of our skulls on a constant diet of local home every day work.

Must have been a great job plenty of money no worries home at 5 every night bringing the kids to the park doing the homework putting them to bed getting up to bring them to school

This is why I’m a cage monkey, as that type of hgv driving bores the crap out of me and I was wasting away through lack of physical work (I was doing pallets) Done it for 2 months . Doing cages I’m home every night and payed well. Do around 45hrs or less over 4 days. We work harder than our Tesco cousins though as we push ours into the shop not just to the tail lift. That pace is too slow and boring for me.
I have no problem with 9 hour shifts but they should be 9 hours work not 3 hours work and 6 pi55ing about and at £15 PH = £675 less stoppages if this is you crack on
It was a 9 hour rest after the 15 hour shift
Followed by 14,5h shift and 9 hour REST again
I would love 9 hour shifts you know like normal people

and if you want 9 hour shifts with fair money train to be a plumber or a gas fitter and get out of transport
dont accept a job then try and dictate the pace
My day today is planned 9hrs, taking a 30 now and I’ll be done by 8hrs. Paid breaks too, too much doom and gloom regarding hgv putting a lot of people off.

To reiterate mine, transport can be not only 60+ hours a week. I had to take this job in particular because nothing else was on offer and I’ve been out of work for 3 months. I will keep looking for a job in TRANSPORT where I can work 45-50 hours a week on days. On the subject of pay I only brought it up because it’s nothing remarkable in this case (just over 40k base pay + overtime) however it’s not my primary concern. I also don’t accept that £12-13 per hour is an adequate compensation for the work we’re doing

When I was day driver at Malcolms, it was 3 x 15hrs, 2 x 13hrs and they punished you the following week with short, half mile, runs if you didn’t come out every 2nd Saturday. That was on Containers but I was married then and never seen her.
I’m now sitting in the house, divorced and not working and wouldn’t mind being back to it as the boredom of sitting in the house is no fun.

I cut my time back a few years ago to 4 days, still tramping but I enjoy tramping, I do not see nights out as a disadvantage as some do…and occasionly I will do a full week, but only if and when it suits ME.
I am also guilty of what Zac’s mate said about missing a lot of my kids growing up, but in mitigation (if it counts) they all spent a lot of time coming with me all over Euro and UK in school hols… one at a time btw. , a lot of good memories were made in those days.
A mate of mine who has also seen the light after a lifetime in the job has negotiated a 3 week on 1 week off terms with them, they cant get drivers, but they still agreed to it, because my mate said he was jacking if they would not agree to it…(in a tactful non confrontational way btw.)
As some have said, doing 70 hour weeks as a matter of course should not be a thing in this day and age, and it has the far end of f/all with ‘people not wanting work’ either, it’s as I said before, that there is more to life than spending MOST of it in a effin truck, and a few drivers are seeing that at last.
