I remember having a couple of good nights in Yarm near Stockton in the early seventies, when you could park up in the main street.
There was a working men’s club nearby that was a member of the, I.I.R.C. the C.I.U. or Clubs Affiliated or something like that. They had clubs all over the country and after joining for about a quid, you were entitled to a penny off a pint.
Early 70s I used to stop near Slough centre on the A4 near the post sorting office, iirc it was an unofficial site awaiting development. there was a ‘Golden Egg’ nearby for a bit of scoff plus handy pubs. Remember one time getting the train to Paddington and going to the motor show when it was still held in London.
The cattle market at Ross on Wye was a regular place, I think there was accommodation there also, was it Kitties? memory isn’t what it was. I also stopped at Lesmahagow for digs until I was put in a caravan in the lorry park with 4 others, that was the last time I booked in there, it was the first time I had square sausage for breakfast. I loved traveling up to Scotland and luckily for me I had quite regular trips up to Falkirk and Invergordon.

It was “Club and Institute Union” which most WMC’s were affiliated to. I don’t know about the penny off a pint craic as long you had got your CIU card from , usually, your home town WMC it entitled you to gain entry to any CIU WMC throughout the UK and you were always made welcome and paid the same price as the other Club members. Well that’s what two or three of our Drivers used to tell me and one in particular could rhyme off where the cheapest drams were to be had in WMC land ! Cheers Bewick.

Chris.s cafe on the a40 by High Wycome always had a caravan for drivers, if a few of our company were staying in the area we always asked for the caravan it was pretty good.
Doncaster cattle market was another place, plenty of digs in the area also agood C.I.U.club nearby.
