I remember a Company either called Hays Wharf or wharfage, who operated Volvo G88 day cab units.
I ended up driving one of their old motors in 1979, pulling ROBA tilts for a subby from Harlow to Wales and back for Viscosuisse.
Any images of a Hays wharf G88 anyone?
just remembered i had seen a picture of a hays truck checked put in len rogers truck pictures when the page comes up there will be two pictures of t-cab and topline scanias click on the picture this opens the site go to page three and there is a pic on the left hand side half way down the page enjoy
I remember those G88 volvo,s they were in dagenham cold stores. After they replaced them with new tractors they kept a few for shunters and used them for years.
that subby pulling the roba tilts wasnt charlie malia by any chance
Yes it was Charlie Mallia!
I only drove it for a few weeks, nights out across the seats. But the reason for posting about it was in reference to the Hays wharf fleet.
Are you John Kelly by any chance?

That was Hays Storage alongside the A13 at Barking, which I think was Containerways before being taken over by Hays.Anyway,I remember the G88’s very well as it was quite common to sit there all day waiting to be tipped or loaded.
Used to see the G88’s going up and down the A12 to Felixstowe too.

Their depot must have been called Hays Wharf since it was on the riverside then KW. Now you mention it, the name Hays Storage seems to fit better .

Hays are very big in France these days, except here it is pronounced ‘ice’ .
I used to load back from them a lot from Bondoufle, south of Paris for Bordeaux.
Would tip locally in the morning and then drop the trailer in to them to load on the night shift, picking it up in the early hours to set off SW.
The first time I did it they tried to insist that my presence was required on the dock to supervise from about 9pm, yeah right I don’t think so .
After I’d convinced them otherwise it was a good little number - train into Paris wander round the sights including a nice meal, come ‘home’ and go to bed.

Not sure now about the Containerways bit,I think it was probably called Dagenham Storage before it became Hays.
We used to go to loads of container packers around that area at the time.
I’ll go searching, I took a pic of a G.88 in Hays colours in a Dagenham container base, I think it had been downgraded to a shunter, if I find the photo I’ll post it…
I’ve seen the one on Hanks, it could well be the same motor, the one I took the photo of was still in Hays white and pale blue and still looked half decent!!
I have also found a couple of poor quality pics of UKON F.88s on Jubilee Way in April '79, ones a 240 and the other is a 290, both pulling UKON tilts.
UKON trucking, now theres a name that I remember
I have seen the Hays shunt G88 image somewhere on the net
skandiahamn. Just wanted to see them as they were when they were working. but ta anyway!
With an ID like Twoninety88 I take it you’re an F.88 fan, I drove a silver grille 240(L-reg) on Seabourne (subby) and apart from constantly kicking you in the back it was a dream to drive, in two years the only breakdown I had was a heater pipe bursting under the drivers seat spraying hot water up the back of my legs. A length of rubber tube and a jubilee clip and half an hour I was mobile again!!
If and when I find out how to post pics I’ll stick some on.
Heh heh, you suspect right Thats my old girl in the avatar, a 290 F88 PVJ757R bought from Bulmers in 1982 or 1983.
We had five of them on Hayford & Beazley at Harlow, and were a joy to drive. We ended up using them for UK,French and German work right up until the new fleet of Scania 112,s went on the road.
PS had the heater pipes go meself!

Hays Wharf was the name of the old site they had on the Thames in the East End of London several (many) years earlier. Saw a picture once in an office it was a cast concrete jobby of a building, painted white?!?!?
Can’t for the life of me remember where Containerways was though, went there lot’s but there was so many places all doing the same, ISO boxes everywhere you went along the A13 a few years ago.

Containerways old site, (well the offices anyway), are now a church. The old Dagenham Storage site is now Kuehne and Nagel, I think.
