Now and again I need to load up a rented truck to get materials on and off the job. Usually heap the truck as densely as possible. My questions are regarding transporting loads on the road; which there is limited information to find and police should make this information far more accessible if they really are interested in making transporting loads safer, or maybe they’re just after our money and points on our licences - who would’ve thought that .
I rent a truck now and again for my resuable materials, this is approximately one - two fully loaded Transit Dropside or something similar which the rental place has (sometimes Mercedes Sprinter or Volkswagen thingy) either is perfect for what I need.
Now I strap everything down well, and have stillages that stack ontop of eachother well and strap them down they can’t go anywhere - but what is over-stacking in the eyes of the law? Reasonable commonsense?
Also, I have timbers and scaffold tubes etc that need to protrude the vehicle. I remember finding some info on the net that it must not protrude more than 1 metre and must have a visible marker on-it. But where can I find the exact information, so I can print it out and show a policeman should I be unlucky enough to be pulled over by a nasty one.
Sometimes the car (not ideal for what I’m using it for but I can’t justify getting another / or a truck just for this) does not have much of a boot, as it’s a sports car (Nissan 350Z) so it really isn’t ideal for transporting my bits and pieces but it’s handy now and again and don’t want to get anything else as it’s mainly for personal use and I still love it. I have had it stacked in the boot before so I could not see in my rear view mirror - but neither can vans! So what would be the punishment here? How can I find out all possible punishments likely? I hear that it’s only about £20 fine and no points, but need to find out if this is true. Whatever happens I cannot get any points as I need licence.
Majority of time I’m going into London on my motorcycle, now and again I need to bring some tools in on that . So I strap them down good, what are my limitations. I thought I over-loaded my bike but saw a guy yesterday with a ladder strapped onto his bike and an amazing load of tools.
Anyone know where I can get a true rulebook for the road, which is what the highway code should have! Thanks for any imput
