The last few months I’ve been considering whether to set up my own haulage company. My dad ran his own for over 20 years but had enough and jacked it in around 5 years ago. I haven’t driven an HGV for a while, I have my full class 1 licence and used to want to eventually work for and take over from my dad. Didn’t work out the way it was planned so I’m now thinking of buying a van and working my way up.
Any drivers/owner drivers/operators out there can you tell me if it’s worth it, if the industry is any better/worse than it used to be etc. Would appreciate any advice given whether for or against!
Just found a post from another user last year that asked a similar question as me…think I will leave this as a dream and stick to being an enthusiast! Not worth the hassle!
Well, it’s all about the knowledge, if you know of good paying, stable, ongoing, year round work that you can actually get on then yeah great, if not & you’re just going to magic it as you go along then don’t do it!!!

Well, some people have set up a new haulage company and made millions from it, other people have set up a new haulage company and lost the house. You pays your money and takes your choice.

Aiming for somewhere in the middle of those two points is probably your better option IMHO

Yes, I am somewhere in between (although definitely nearer to the second option than the first )

Same in any business, if it was so easy to run a business and make money everyone be at it
