Thomas Cromptons - Ashton in Makerfield.
This must have been the forerunner of the company I collected hinges from in the late 70’s on Gerrard St, Ashton in Makerfield. Known then as “GKN Crompton’s” they were still faithfull to Bedford’s then, using 8 tonner TK’s and a little TK artic, but 16 tonner Commer Commando’s had taken the place of the Leyland’s.
I’ve just tried to Google map their works and found it’s been replaced by a shopping centre.
I used to deliver brass wire to them in the 80’s, they moved to a new factory nr. Haydock just off the East Lancs rd. by the motor auctions.

Anyone remember Currys Shamrock express from pilsworth,Dews also ran a foden 6 wheel low loader which was featured in truck magazine around 89. Perhaps Dreva might still have it . About twelve months after the footbridge on the m62 was replaced, a yellow foden low loader from astley ,cant remember the name knocked the bridge of again. I dont know if this is true but a guy told me when it got knocked off the second time a scammel tipper was overtaking the low loader and a piece off concrete went through the scammels windscreen injuring the drivers arm .Someone went to see if the driver was ok and the driver told him that he had just stolen the truck and then drove off before the police came. Regards Foden 46I recall Shamrock Express for the late 70s. They used to be based on Heywood Industrial Estate. They specialised in overnight groupage and full load service to Northern and Southern Ireland. A friend of mine, Terry Monaghan, used to work for Shamrock for a number of years. About 1980 the company became Currie Contracts running wagon and drags, however, I will always remember the F86s they ran at that time. I have attached a couple of photos apologies for the quality.
Used to drive for Shamrock in the 70s knew Terry well, had his own motor. Hope he is keeping well, pass on my regards.

Courtesy Wiganworld.Nobles office in Ashton under lyne( not makerfield) was on Scotland st.just lower down from where the telephone exchange is now at the eastern end of the bypass. before Vitafoam took over there where about 8or 9 drivers at Ashton, Stan Bennet, Johnny ■■■■■, Jimmy Walker, Barry Longden, Gordon Malhamed,Tommy Kelly and myself.I cant remember who the others where, it was nearly 50 years ago.LOL,

Killingbecks did pull tanks but not when I was there they also had some tractors painted to match
and only these I believe were supposed to pull the beer tank trailers.

anyone remember the company preistners red erfs think they was from eccles . not sure tho. my dad use to run iff containers in there in the early 70s on nights from hull. any one got any pictures ov them. regards johny rose63.

Hello Harry, I have been trying for the last couple of days to get on to Pauls North West Trucks site but it seems to be unavailable at the moment. Maybe Moomooland has got the the same trouble as the Royal Bank Of Scotland

Steve it does seem a long term thing I’ve been trying on and off to reach
Northwest trucks for a couple of months or more strange I have not seen
anything mentioned as to why the site is unavailable, there are a few of
my old motors on there which I have been going to print off but have only
just learned how to use a printer, it’s a case of get the know-how lose the
site, I just can’t win eh’.

Pauls site has been offline for several weeks now. His Becks and Ridings sites are both working OK.
Sent him an Email last week but have not had a reply yet.

The bloke who owns the site Paul is on has pulled the plug again apparently the same as they did when we had pics on the fotopic site.It must be a nightmare for Paul after all the hard work he put into his site.He sent me an email about it a few weeks ago saying that the bloke was thinking of shutting it down and it now seems as though he has.Here’s hopeing Paul gets up and running again sometime soon.

2 pics of Henry Johnsons Foden S80’s from about 1976, thats me in the second pic, excuse the tat in the windows and on the cab, I was young at the time only 22, and it was the first artic I had that I could call ‘mine’. drove it regulary until about Sept; 1978. Loaded for Lowestoft in the pic with special casting’s for export.
A couple I drove for Ossie Ingham, the 142 never got painted in his colours, I pulled for OOCL/Furness Withey out of the Con Base in T/Park with it.

I used to talk to richard regularly in the 90s,real gent,his com,s demise came about i believe when all the creems mills changed hands and subsequently shut.I remember when he had no artics only 8 wheelers,started haulage business as an extention of his agricultural activities as he had a farm as well.He retired just before me but kept popping in the mills to see how his lad was shaping,acording to his drivers not as good as the old feller,all chase.
