J & r wright from glasgow

does any remember j & r wright from glasgow used to run rigids on flat work all over the uk

I recall the name, didn’t they run one of the Argyle Christina’s?

Pete.

yeh thats the one,s but i sure j& r wright used to call them marie argyles some of the lads used to park up in our yard in liverpool when the were delivering in the area and my dad used to buy some of there old trucks

I remember them well. Wee Joe Wright was one of Glasgow’s character’s. He was a wee man with, as we say here, ‘Bowly legs’. ie: His bum and ankles met with a large gap in-between! Always picking his nose.
He did a lot of work in the Glasgow area. TDG eventually bought him out and the depot at Farme Cross, Rutherglen, became their property. Joe still ran the place.
Here is a rumour about that firm!
There was a firm in railway arches in Commerce Street, Kingston, Glasgow, A & J Clark. All rigids doing local work in the whisky trade in Glasgow. Next thing, they are into artics and doing all sorts all over the UK. Rumour had it someone had bought them over, transferred TDG vehicles to Clarks name without them knowing it, and doing TDG 's work as well, to add injury to insult!
It was blamed on a certain party who left TDG Rutherglen quickly. Clarks fleet was absorbed into Wrights.
Next thing a new business, J Wright & Partners Transport, goes into business at Dawsholm, Maryhill, Glasgow. They seemed to do a lot of artic work that used to be done at Rutherglen. United States Lines, for example. (I wonder why■■?)
