Why is it they ride along a busy stretch of road when there is a nicely painted and clear cycle lane on the left hand side of them ? Just because they wear hi-viz and helmet doesn’t mean they will not got nocked off and ran over. Gets right on my ■■■■, it’s not like we start driving along the pavement when it’s busy even though there is no1 on the road … Rant over

All depends on the cycle lane/path if they are kerbs and junctions every 20 meters, and families with kids on bikes are using the cycle paths.
If your on a top end racing bike, doing 30mph whilst clipped in the pedals then the above cycle lane is pretty much useless.
If you got slicks on and they is a sudden downpour, water runs off trees with all the sap renders the cycle path a certain accident waiting to happen. Same as a freshly painted cycle path, slicks + rain + nice smooth paint = wheels sliding
I will go out with my camera this week and show you why I might not ride a top end racing bike whilst clipped round my local area of cycle paths. I know the lanes/paths will be obstructed with cars, branches, glass and lorries etc
Iam only assuming here why the Lycra clad urban bikers might not use a cycle path. Me however is a mountain biker who never sees Tarmac.
In my opinion cycle paths are ok for families to get around on, on a family bike ride.if they are careful of the glass and debris.

I see where your coming from with the kerbs every 20m or whatever , but these last few days I’ve seen numerous amounts of them ridin on the road not going that fast and there is barely no1 in sight on the pavement/cycle lane
Makes me mad too. Empty cycle paths, narrow roads or awkward to pass areas and thick cyclists on the road

What gets me is that you see cyclist’s using a DC and ride at a slow pace. Accident waiting to happen there

You consider then that you’d be safer mixing it with 44t trucks, buses, cars etc. on slicks, rather than risking a bit of tree sap and a spill away from the road??

I’d suggest that the “silly billy” is the one who doesn’t go out prepared for the vagaries of British weather. I can appreciate that slicks give lower rolling resistance etc and yes they’re fine in the dry, but this is the UK ferchrissakes. And tree sap or not I’d suggest that a seperate cycle path is by definition a safer place than mixing it with powered vehicles in the wet. Especially if you’re riding a full-on racing bicycle, without lights (in case the extra weight and drag slows you down presumably) or the inclination to look behind you before executing a manouevre as most of that ilk seem to do. That “life-saver” is drummed into every motorcyclist throughout their training and it’s even more essential for cyclists.
Another classic example of the minority of so-called “serious” cyclists, who really ought to know better, thinking that everything has to revolve around them.

Like I’ve stated Iam a mountain biker I don’t ride any bike with slicks!
But go into any bike shop and nearly all racing bikes will have slicks on, almost every one who has a racing bike will have slicks on. The only time you see tread is on hybrid or commuter bikes. seriously are saying all racing cyclists thatthey are using the wrong tyres!

So if I am driving along a pot holed road it is okay for me to use a cycle lane, Don’t be daft if a cycle lane is there use it.

Put it this way - if slicks are fine - why do motorcyclists not use them on the road? They do on the track…when it isn’t raining!!!
Sorry, but I think that if you use what are effectively bald tyres on any bike, on our often wet, diesel ridden, greasy roads, mixing it with large vehicles, cars, metal manhole covers etc, it really does prove what a set of dunces a lot of cyclists are.
All about surface area.
Chester, you are wasting your time. You might as well ask them why they break the speed limit for trucks at every opportunity. They don’t know, and don’t want to know about tyres for cycles. They are not interested in reasons not to use the cycle lanes. They want everyone off their hallowed Tarmac so they don’t have to bother looking out for other road users. If it wasn’t bikes it would be some other form of transport getting on their moobs. Why do they think that some anecdote about some “Lycra clad helmet wearing hi viz covered” cyclist will make me, or anyone that cycles, stop doing it.
