Just a warning if your parking up for the night on the A15 between Lincoln and Scunthorpe , Coppers have been ticketing drivers for not parking with the lights on regardless if your there overnight so be warned
So if you park in a layby you need lights on??
Why
Don’t remember that in the highway code…
Ooops
Parking at night
248
You MUST NOT park on a road at night facing against the direction of the traffic flow unless in a recognised parking space.
[Laws CUR reg 101 & RVLR reg 24]
249
All vehicles MUST display parking lights when parked on a road or a lay-by on a road with a speed limit greater than 30 mph (48 km/h).
[Law RVLR reg 24]
250
Cars, goods vehicles not exceeding 1525 kg unladen weight, invalid carriages, motorcycles and pedal cycles may be parked without lights on a road (or lay-by) with a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) or less if they are
at least 10 metres (32 feet) away from any junction, close to the kerb and facing in the direction of the traffic flow
in a recognised parking place or lay-by
Other vehicles and trailers, and all vehicles with projecting loads, MUST NOT be left on a road at night without lights.
[Laws RVLR reg 24 & CUR reg 82(7)]
This will bring in a fortune in fines…
I work nights and almost every layby in the country seems to be full of trucks (without lights!!!)
I thought if the layby had a verge of some sort seperating it from the road it was OK but no verge etc is a no no
its also not unknown for plod to ticket hgvs parked overnight in ind ests
Thats right, if the road and the layby are seperated, you dont need your lights on.
its just another money making scam, but legal. could call it Highway robbery.
Police did a few that were parked at the layby near J14 M6 one night last week.
Some trucker must have cut them up or had a dalliance with his wife (jobs Knackerd)
I work nights myself , and have noticed plod onthe a15 a lot this week , thought they may have a freight watch sceme running , but alas no, i know this is what they are doing as one of our drivers stopped for a 45min break pulled his curtains ,only to see a FPN on the screen .Cant see why the plod cant wake drivers and tell them could they put here lights on please as your breaking the law, instead underhand tactics wait until they are asleep and ticket them

More than likely his Chief Constable had bollocked him for his crime detection rate being poor, so he goes out, detects some crimes, solves the crime, issues the tickets which cover the cost of his wages, forces crime detection rate goes up, happy Chief Constable stops the bollockings
Always left the sides on in a lay-by…Because my dad used to!
why do ‘proper’ work like crime prevention/detection,when they can hit easy sleeping targets? No doubt their presence deters diesel thieves/curtain slashers, mind you even if they did actually catch/prosecute anybody for that, probs be less fine than parking w/o sidelights, heinous!
Hiya …theres a site on truck net that asks, is it better to earn a living driving or shelf stacking.
i think i now know the answer.
try this one …my mate went for his medical!!! the doctor signed in the wrong place so this
had to be adjusted after the weekend (drivers always get a friday appointment) so the form
goes to the DVLA.( registered post) after about a week nothing has come back.
the driver phones the dvla and askes if he can still drive, NO.
the driver is out of work for 3 days untill he gets back his licence… the doctor then asks for £85
for his medical fee…my mate just lost half a weeks wages because the stupid B…d cant do
their job…if that was a drivers mistake he would have been dragged through every court in the land.
god it makes me boil.
John
PS i’ll take a pill thing will be all right now.
Instead of leaving your lights on,can’t you just use one of those pushbike led lights that seem to be the norm on bikes now ■■.Some of those are really bright ,surely won’t do your batteries any good leaving your sides on all night!!!.
Or is there some stupid law saying it has to be the actual truck side lights.

I’d have thought that most batteries would go flat with the side lights on all night, especially as the batteries age. Some batteries barely manage to operate a night heater all night as it is and we all know that companies only replace batteries as an absolute last resort.
The real problem here is drivers being in the position in the first place and having to park in those stupid lay-bys due to total lack of any alternative.

Thats basically the same as the “Truck Theft Area” trailer that the plod leave unattended in laybys on the A14 uses. Cant see why you cant use 2 white ones at the front and 2 red ones at the rear.
Perhaps some of the police or Vosa guys on here could advise , obviously in their personal opinion with no guarantees
I think you only have to luminate the off side!! remember that function on the stalk of older cars, left or right side light according to which side of the road you was parked on!! also whenI was on skip lorries and was leaving bins on residential roads over night,we only ever fixed lights to the off side !!
Offside only needs to be lit. IIRC.
Buy a couple of led lights and run them direct from the battery, no probs.
I use led bike lights and the batteries go for months, although i do avoid these sorts of laybys if possible.
i have just paid a fine for parking in a lay by on the a 15,£30. in the same lay by were 2 polish trucks which were not ticketed, when i rang to complain i was told it costs more money to recover than the fine is, so we leave them alone,
moral of the story is you cant park in your own country without paying whereas, foreigners can!!!
