Weigh in motion sensors

Has anyone been caught by these? I know there is one in use South of Perry Barr on the M6, wasnt aware these things even existed until I saw a video on them, at my induction last Monday

This video?

yes other driver in the firm i drive for was caught 2 weeks ago at the one on the m6 near stafford, he was 570kg over, they only gave him a warning but let him see how acurate it was and it was spot on, even took a picture of the truck he said

Theres a new one also just been installed between J16 and Watford Gap Northbound. Its not switched on yet but i think its fairly iminent.

Mick.

i think they are more common than we think.
i know there is one under the roundabout going north at carlisle just before todhills.junction 44.

There is a weight in motion set up westbound at clackett lane on the M25. It is even set up for the incoming slip road to the service area.

It is activated when VOSA are open for buisness at leatherhead and a VOSA car picks you up at the top of reigate hill after the split for J8.

I broke down and pulled into the layby behind the VOSA site at J9 and while talking to an irish fridge driver he told me all about it.

Bit that amazed me was that he was over on the drive axle of his 4x2 unit. Having arranged to have his load adjusted somewhere near heathrow VOSA sent him on his way with a proviso that he couldn’t exceed 30mph. They also he insisted that he took the most direct route via the M25.

Now I know I’m only a thicko truck driver but surely an unescorted truck doing 30mph on one of our busiest motorways is a little more dangeroous than a truck thats marginally over its axle weight by law but still within its design limits.

cheers

the only one i know of is the one neilf mentioned, there is a traffic cop on another truckers forum who might be able to give you some help

I would think after watching the video that they are located wherever there is a check point.

if thats the case then there will be more than 5!!

As with all these recent anti establishment posts, if you are running sensible and not taking the ■■■■. If your drive axle is 2.000kg over the top then you should expect a pull. To my mind the WIM sensor can pick out the bad lads without troubling the rest of us.

Of course, I expect to be called a do gooder or have a holier than thou attitude, but rest assured while working for many of the less reputable companies or when running vehicles of my own, I have reshaped every transport regulation over the years by avoiding ministry hotspots or travelling under cover of darkness. Now technology has caught up on us. we should welcome the fact that it is a lot easier to say “No”

i know there is a wom sensor on the forfar bypass n/b, there also a wim sensor on the a9 n/b at daviot, carlisle j44 n/b has a wim sensor, m6 n/b between j13 and 14 has wim sensor, i would suspect that within the next 2-3 years most vosa sites will have them

I think there are currently 30 of them

It’s not for me to say where or how many sites there are. However, the basic piece of technology that they use was put into roads for an entirely different purpose. That said, there are a couple of hundred sets of cables dotted up and down the country, in theory any of those cable sets could be hooked up to ANPR cameras.

Just before J42 M6 Northbound in Carlisle,so they can pull you at their facility just after J44.
