So what happens with certain bus companies who have someone employed to do the vehicle checks

Surely then you would go straight on to drive

Think the ARRIS route is right

i think bull and whats that other word that comes to mind

I cant find anything that mentions that its a legal requirement to do a 15 min check and have it shown on your tacho. It sounds as if your company has very strict measures in place…daft really as its not showing you doing a daily check on the vehicle at all■■?

There are certain Gendarmes who will fine you for not showing 15 min on your tacho.

i have a quick walk around, lights ,tyres, load etc, visual check, tick the boxes in the book and sign, make a brew,by this time 15 mins is up,the company is abit keen, but if thats what they want,

The French condoms (Gendarmes) like to see 5 minutes on other work before starting a shift

I,m sorry but if i am taking a vehicle (lgv or bus) out on the road i will check the vehicle my self as i am responsible for the safety and legality of this vehicle

Are yous busy and if not are they looking for things so they can give it the not working out speech.

Start taking 45 minutes to do them as that’s what some places give you.

Change their tune if you have a few drivers and they all did this.

Funnily enough we have recently found on our notice board a note saying that we are cutting time too fine for our morning checks and to get to our jobs. I think maybe operators may have had a letter from VOSA pointing out the importance of such checks. However I am still searching for the regulation, I will report back should I find it… :unamused:

Hi Noodle soup, the answer to your question is actually quite simple…

I love the people who say “by law”… :sunglasses:

Since they’re so knowledgeable, you could politely ask them which law they mean, but please don’t hold your breath whilst waiting for an answer.   :grimacing:

:open_mouth: If you get an intelligent answer, please post it up for us to discuss.

My own take on this is to suggest that different types of vehicles/loads will need different lengths of time to check them correctly.

It takes me 15 minutes to boil the kettle and find my socks, so first job is to put my card in and switch on the satellite. 2nd job is to drink the tea. :stuck_out_tongue:

Why were your socks on safari and not on your feet?! :open_mouth:

my lot are pretty heavy into this.
i certainly don’t have any idea of the legal issues, but they want us too show, 15 mins in the morning, for checks etc, and 15 mins, at the end of the day, for booking off.
i’m hourly paid, so, thats 2.5 hours a week minimum, all helps

card in, kettle on

I think you won’t find a set time limit for your checks to be done by any law,but what you will find if you get stopped by vosa and they check tacho/digicard and they notice that you jumped in the truck and drove off according to your tacho/digicard,then i think they might ask if you did the vehicle checks. The best way is put your tacho/digi card in 1st thing before doing anything and put it on other work, then carry out your daily vehicle checks.Thats the way i do it,at least they can see the other work recorded and if they ask you what you was doing you just tell them vehicle check’s.everyone’s happy.

I take my socks off before putting my pyjamas on, occasionally I replace said socks with cleaner ones

While Wheel Nut was rounding up his spare socks (bless! ) I had a quick Google around.

I checked the the FTA (Freight Transport Association)- someone is bound to ask me what it stands for, DSA (Driving Standards Agency) and VOSA (nuff said), plus a couple of government transport websites and I couldn’t find anything about allowing 15 minutes for the daily check.

I think you have to keep the paperwork for 15 months, however!

Having said that, I have worked for a Transport Manager who was an ex-VOSA enforcement officer. He used to insist that the first 15 minutes of every shift were allocated to performing the Driver’s Daily Walkaround Checks on the vehicle and no-one should load within the first 15 minutes of every shift.

So I expect this means that there is a document somewhere that does specify that the check should take about 15 minutes, although I agree with DieselDave that it would depend on the type of vehicle being driven and the standard it is maintained to.

A tidy, well maintained truck shouldn’t take too long to check, it’s when there are lots of little niggling defects and paperwork that doesn’t match up that it takes a while :unamused:

As Kitkat says, if you can show you’ve taken time to check your vehicle, everyone should be happy :sunglasses:

It normally takes me about 15-20 minutes to do the vehicle check and complete necessary paperwork. I don’t normally put the tacho in until I start driving, then put an EDR line on and a crossed hammers between the line and the start of the trace. I used to put the tacho in straight away and put the EDR line on but I always got a “Gaps between lines and traces require explanation” infringement.

I hate to pee on your parade but we’ve got 200 drivers at Bedford and, you’ve guessed it, we get 45 minutes to couple up and do our daily checks. Safety costs money.
